Peaceful days under the shade of pine trees within easy walking distance of 25 kilometres' worth of sandy beaches and spectacular French coastline… bliss, non? Sail along to Résidence Sous Les Pins, a family-friendly site in the Charente-Maritime seaside resort of Ronce-les-Bains, five minutes’ drive from the town of La Tremblade. The site is on the spectacular Côte Sauvage, so be prepared for plenty of sandy beach days and oceanside explores – rent a bike less than five minutes’ walk from base and get pedalling, following the coast as far as Charente-Maritime’s tallest lighthouse (at Coubre) in one direction and L’Île d’Oléron in the other (don’t worry, there’s a bridge). There’s lots round here to entertain everyone in the family, with scuba classes and kayaking tours within easy reach, a casino a quick stroll away, and a zoo or two within half an hour. If interests skew more towards foodie and crafty excursions, nab a spot on La Coquille Filante road train between La Tremblade and Ronce-les-Bains to wander the markets. Don’t be in a hurry to spend too much time away from the site though: bring your favourite pooch along for the trip and rest weary adventuring legs together in the evenings, or spend days in one spot with games of volleyball, basketball and ping pong. During high season, kids who are full of energy during site days can be packed off (lovingly) to the kids’ club so parents can have a few hours of zen.

As if watersports and biking weren’t already enough for active types, there are even more ways to explore this part of the world within easy reach: nab a berth on one of the boat tours from La Tremblade or Royan, see it all from the air with an afternoon’s paragliding, or test heads for heights on two adventure parks' rope courses, all within 10 minutes’ drive. Take a step back in time in the museum at the Coubre lighthouse, then stay there with a trip to the 12th century at Château Fort de Saint Jean d’Angle (20 minutes away) – where dressing up and playing along is all part of the experience – and a wander around the cliffside cave dwellings at Matata a little further afield. Return to the present with a visit to the resort town of Royan, half an hour from base, to poke around museums and markets, challenge Lady Luck at the casino and splash around at the beach before evenings spent whirling around rides and watching fireworks at Luna Park amusements 10 minutes from base. For urban days, the museums, aquarium, stately piles and Old Quarter of La Rochelle port city are just under an hour away.
