All set for thrilling stays in São Paulo state? At Fazenda das Palmeiras, guests have access to an activity ranch with oodles of options for active hol in a waterside location on the banks of the Pinheirinho river. With the centre of Brotas and the major BR-369 road 25 minutes' drive away, it's also a pretty nifty base for explores both near and far. This place does its utmost to help visitors get the most out of their time in the open air: two outdoor pools are on hand for alfresco swims, while braver guests can zoom down the high-adrenaline zipline and waterslide that run through the well-kept grounds. Looking for more aquatic adventure? Site-organised jaunts to wilder waters nearby are pretty sure to make a splash: rafting trips and visits to the Santa Maria waterfall both come highly recommended. Back at base, a games room and chillout area are available if you need to take a breather. Fresh coffee is available in the morning to help you get going; later in the day, head to the bar for cocktails to wind down again in the evening. A dedicated barbecue area makes it easy for guests to cook up a churrasco, while on Saturdays and public holidays a pop-up restaurant lights its wood-fired oven and lays on a mouth-watering menu of local dishes.

Brotas (25 minutes' drive) is a mid-sized town with supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants. While you're here, swing by the Museu do Caipira, a free interactive museum that gives insights into the region's traditions via its smells, sounds and (yes, hungry reader) its tastes. The CEU observatory and planetarium in the north of the town are also worth a gander. Rather get out into the sticks? Viva Brotas eco park is a hub for flora and fauna (35 minutes from base or 10 minutes from Brotas). Check out its reptile centre, join a birdwatching tour, or take to the skies for yourself: ziplining, abseiling and a 60-metre free fall platform are all on hand here. There's also something called 'superbike': think a pedal-powered tour above the trees. Having glided (or plummeted, the choice is yours…) back to earth, you may well appreciate some explores at ground level. Recanto das Cachoeiras eco park (35 minutes) organises horseback rides through the varied landscape of this top-notch nature reserve. Out of the saddle, spectacular vistas from the park's viewing platforms mean there are plenty of photo-snapping opportunities here, too.
