Set forth for the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge at the southern end of the lake to spy migratory birds such as the yellow-footed gull, native in the US only to Salton Sea lake. For hunting, fishing and swimming, head to the Salton Sea State Recreation Area on the north eastern edge of the lake; or go off road to and tour the tracks around Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. An easy hour’s drive away, get caught up among the swanky boutiques and swish restaurants around California’s mineral hot-spring capital, Palm Springs. The city's spas are popular for full-on pampering days, and the 100-plus courses around both Palm and Desert Springs bring plenty of golfers too. While in town, keep peepers peeled for lots of fine examples of midcentury-modern architecture, and plan some time to drift along the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway – the world's largest rotating tram car – to the wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Staying around this part of the Californian countryside, trek along to Coachella Valley, a land of sand, rock and rattlesnakes. It’s famed for its world-class hiking trails like the challenging 22-mile Cactus to Clouds trek; as it’s one of the world's most scorching places, guided hikes are highly recommended (even for the experienced walker).
