Hey movie buffs, do you fancy following in the footsteps of John Wayne? Then off to Log Cabin Wilderness Lodge with you – the Hollywood legend’s among the guests who came to stay here in the park’s early days. As you’ll have garnered by now, this is a place with real history: around the 11-acre park are refurbished buildings dating back to the 1940s, alongside smart modern constructions. It’s also (and you may have garnered this part too) a place with real Alaska wilderness – the nearest town, Tok, is a half-hour drive away, and it’s both off the grid and far removed from the nearest phone tower. Thrown into that wilderness package are some stunning scenery, frequent wildlife sightings and some spectacular natural phenomena – come along in summer for the midnight sun, or keep your fingers crossed for sightings of the Northern Lights in winter. And surely such scenes can only be enhanced by viewing them from the park’s woodburning hot tub, where you can wallow in waters heated to a balmy 105ºF/40ºC? A woodfired sauna is also on hand for folks who like their heat a little drier. As for how you spend your rural days, that’s up to you – hiking, fishing and climbing are popular picks, as are cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing through the chillier months.

From Tok, take Highway 1 and turn left at milepost 98.5. The park is two miles down the road, where the state maintenance ends.

Lokale seværdigheder

The big draw around here, clearly, is the million or so acres of wild countryside that surrounds the lodge. The park doesn’t organise activities but the folks here are happy to give advice on hiking trails for all levels, and to share their secret fave spots to fish for northern pike and Arctic grayling. Bring your binoculars along, for there’s a lot of wildlife spotting and birdwatching to be done here (moose frequently wander past, and eagles, trumpeter swans and goshawks are among the local residents). And if you’re swinging by in winter, perhaps think about chucking skis or snowshoes in the car too – there are cross country trails for both through the local area. If you’re venturing back towards civilisation, the trip to Tok will take you half an hour or so. While you’re here, look out for sled dog demos (this is, after all, the self-styled sled dog capital of Alaska), take a boat trip on the Tanana River and try your luck panning for gold in local streams and creeks. It’s also worth dropping in on the eclectic collections, traditional games and miniature golf at MuklukLand, 40 minutes away.
