Fancy a few nights out in remote backcountry? Maine Primitive Skills School’s wild campsite is a short walk from the trailhead car park through mixed hardwood forest. There you can pick your spot among the trees, spark up the barbecue and settle down to watch the stars or listen to the rustling sounds of the forest in the privacy of your tent.
Not sure you want to be totally isolated? Well, luckily for you there’s plenty around and about to keep you in touch with civilisation. You can pick up supplies for your camping adventures from Augusta (10 minutes’ drive) and if you don’t want to go completely self-sufficient, there are stacks of bars, diners and takeaways there to keep you fed and watered.
Over 1,000 acres of peaceful State Wildlife Management land sits adjacent to the campsite – and it’s all yours to explore. If you’re up for a hike, follow the ATV trail to Spectacle Pond (an hour and 40 minutes’ walk), where you can row out to an island or try your hand at fishing for bass.
Not for you? Then how about having a go at disc golf or bowling? You’ll find them both within a 30-minute stroll of the trailhead if that’s more to your style.
And don’t forget that the offices of Maine Primitive Skills School are right across the road from the camping area. Feel free to go on over and to say hi the folks there – and if you need any tips on making your wild camping experience more enjoyable, they are just the guys to ask.

Lokale seværdigheder
Can’t decide to head for the water or the forest? Bicentennial Nature Park (10 minutes’ drive) might just be the answer. Backed by woodland hiking trails, it’s also a wild swimming hotspot with a lakeside dock, picnic spots and water slides. If you want to chill on a sandy beach, head for Androscoggin Lake (40 minutes), where you can also hire kayaks and maybe – just maybe – you might get to spot elusive ospreys.
Ramp up the culture stakes with a musical night out at Waterville Opera House or whizz in to see the cracking art collection in Colby College Museum (both 25 minutes). Augusta (10 minutes) has its fair share of attractions too, from the colonial architecture of the Old Post Office and Courthouse to the rare trees and flowers at Viles Arboretum, as well as plenty of microbreweries to tempt you in when you’ve had enough of sightseeing.
While you’re out and about, the historians among you can brush up on your military knowledge on tours of the garrison at 18th-century Old Fort Western (10 minutes) or Fort Halifax State Historic Site (20 minutes).
