If you’re in the mood for adventure, there’s much to do from the chilled-out site at Selina Maderas. You're in for a pretty cool time at this dog-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of San Juan del Sur, where comfy tipis sit within a re-designed traditional jungle hideaway that's got views of the surrounding Pacific coastal hills and sea-washed beaches, all to the soundtrack of howler monkeys that often pass through the area. With two sandy beaches five minutes’ drive away and an on-site activity centre, there's plenty to keep you busy here. The centre runs yoga classes on the yoga deck with sublime mountain views, and surf courses, sea kayaking and snorkelling on the local beaches. Switch from a dip in the Pacific to a dip in the outdoor swimming pool if you like… you can plunge into the site's pool whenever you feel like it (or simply unwind in the surrounding seating area). There’s a cocktail bar on site too, with a soundtrack of commercial or electro-underground beats in the evening. And if you want to combine work and play, there’s a cosy co-working space with wifi where you can catch up on emails. After completing your to-do list, hike to the beach to make the most of the surf hotspots, rummage through the rockpools or slide into one of the restaurants, bars or cafés within 15 minutes’ walk of the site. If you’d rather stay on site, there’s a restaurant here too or a food shop half an hour’s walk away if you want to take something back with you.

Lokale seværdigheder

If you came to Maderas for the surf, the local beaches should sort you out nicely. There are plenty of surf hotspots within easy reach of the site, including Playa Maderas (20 minutes’ walk), Playa Marsella (20 minutes and backed by forests for hiking) and, a little further away, El Remanso (half an hour’s drive and with handy surfboard rental). For more activities that will surely get your blood pumping, there are several activity centres within driving distance of the site too, including the Aventura Las Nubes Canopy Tour and Zipline Park (20 minutes). It's about more than just zipwires… there are also suspended stairs bridges, a Tarzan swing and abseiling available on one of the tallest trees in the town. If you’d prefer a hike, find some of the nicest views around (and there really are plenty) on the way to the Cristo de La Misericordia (around an hour and 10 minutes’ hike directly from the site). This site has a statue of Jesus 134 metres high up on a hill, overlooking the beach.
