Milazzo (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place for a wander, with a castle and rock church to seek out, but it’s probably best known as the jumping-off point for trips to the Aeolian Islands. Head up here for fast ferries to Lipari to visit its ancient fortress and archaeological park or hire scooters or e-bikes to explore its gardens, vineyards and white-sand beaches. There’s plenty of history back on the mainland too: Castello Di Santa Lucia Del Mela, Villa Romana Terme Vigliatore Messina and Castello di Bauso are all within a 25-minute drive and it’s a 40-minute journey to Messina to stroll along its wide boulevards, visit a mighty fine cathedral and seek out more of Sicily’s tempting cuisine. The 35 hectares of landscaped gardens, sculptures and fountains at Parcomuseo Jalari (25 minutes) are definitely worth a wander while you’re here, and there’s a treat in store for motorbike fans at Piccolo Museo Della Moto (half an hour), which has a great little collection of classic bikes.
