To Sicily in search of some tasty things to eat? Bed down at Agriturismo Il Gelsomino Ritrovato, in the island’s Messina region, and such things can easily be sorted right there where you stay. Life at this small, friendly site revolves to a large extent around its servings of home-cooked local food, served up at tables both inside its trattoria and out on the terrace. Sun-ripened aubergines, tomatoes and courgettes frequently feature on the menu, among all sorts of traditional dishes from around the island. It’s not all about the food though… a handy location 10 minutes’ drive from Milazzo’s harbour makes this a fine spot for those intending to take boat trips to the Aeolian islands. To make things even easier, the team here will even organise free transfers to the harbour for their guests (or free transfers to the train station if you’d rather take car-free travels around Sicily instead). Somewhat closer to home is the coastline of the Riviera Di Ponente – in fact, it’ll take you less than 10 minutes to stroll over to the closest beach, which stretches out over several kilometres, to work up an appetite… If even that seems like too much effort for your holiday, you may like to stay on site instead and spend some time by the pool – it’s got plenty of sun loungers and deck chairs to relax in, and there’s a playground to keep the kids busy and a bar to provide cool drinks while you sunbathe.

Local attractions

Milazzo (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place for a wander, with a castle and rock church to seek out, but it’s probably best known as the jumping-off point for trips to the Aeolian Islands. Head up here for fast ferries to Lipari to visit its ancient fortress and archaeological park or hire scooters or e-bikes to explore its gardens, vineyards and white-sand beaches. There’s plenty of history back on the mainland too: Castello Di Santa Lucia Del Mela, Villa Romana Terme Vigliatore Messina and Castello di Bauso are all within a 25-minute drive and it’s a 40-minute journey to Messina to stroll along its wide boulevards, visit a mighty fine cathedral and seek out more of Sicily’s tempting cuisine. The 35 hectares of landscaped gardens, sculptures and fountains at Parcomuseo Jalari (25 minutes) are definitely worth a wander while you’re here, and there’s a treat in store for motorbike fans at Piccolo Museo Della Moto (half an hour), which has a great little collection of classic bikes.
