Germany or Luxembourg? Rural riverside stay or the convenience of a small town? The outdoorsy feeling of a tent or the ease of having everything provided? You’ll be able to do away with all these questions when you stay at Country Camp at Camping Südeifel, where the answer is always 'both, thanks’. This friendly site is in the Rhineland-Palatinate area of Germany, but it's only a few miles from the border with Luxembourg, so you’ll be able to country-hop as you wish. The rural vibe comes from the setting in a nature reserve on the banks of the Prüm river, but the location on the edge of Irrel also means shops and places to eat are within easy walking distance. And the cherry on top? You'll get all the fabulous fresh air of a camping holiday but without the need to lift a finger to get your tent set up – stays here are in smart safari tents that are kitted out with beds, bed linen, a well-equipped kitchen corner and indoor and outdoor furniture. Shared facilities such as wifi, a launderette and well-maintained bathrooms (with hot showers and a dedicated baby/family room) all add to the convenient setup. This is a very scenic area, with plenty of walking and bike trails nearby – and although there's no pool on site, you can finish your day with a dip in the river if you want to cool off. Fishing is also permitted (just check in reception for the rules), and there's a playground for the kids. Also on site is a pizzeria with a lovely terrace that's just the place for an alfresco evening.

Lokale seværdigheder

A popular outing from this site is the Irreler Wasserfalle (half an hour's walk/10 minutes' cycle), where you can see the rapids from the bridge over the river, or launch kayaks for white-water adventures. The falls are part of the Südeifel Naturpark, which has a good number of walking and bike trails for all abilities. There are more great walks at Teufelsschlucht (half an hour's walk/10 minutes' cycle), taking you through intriguing rock formations and natural gorges. The Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht (five minutes' drive) is a popular place for families, with all sorts of dino exhibits to see in the woods. For a different part of history, head to Westwall-Museum Katzenkopf (20 minutes' walk/five minutes' cycle) to go inside a World War II bunker. For a change of scenery, head to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Trier (half an hour's drive) or cross the border to Echternach (10 minutes) and take advantage of the country's free public transport to visit Luxembourg City (45 minutes if you want to drive).
