Start your Drôme days with a saunter around Château Suze-la-Rousse – it’s a mere five-minute stroll from the site to the medieval castle and its gardens. It’s also home to the fab wine-tasting days and weekends of the Université du Vin; if you’d prefer your tipples a little less cerebral you can always just grab a bike and pedal off to one of the wineries scattered around the local area. If you’ve got the tiddlers in tow, skip the vineyards and see the scenery from a canoe trip through the stunning Gorges de l’Ardèche, 45 minutes away, or on a horse/pony trek; a riding centre is 15 minutes away for lessons, treks or carriage rides. Fuel up for those active days with a trip to Montélimar (40 minutes’ drive), where you can learn all about sweetie making at the Palais des Bonbons et du Nougat before filling up on sugary treats in the shops. If you’d rather bypass the sugar highs, steer the small sorts instead towards the crocodile farm in Pierrelatte (20 minutes) or the troglodyte village at Barry (20 minutes).
