Arm yourself with some sun cream and don your best beach attire – Lac de Gérardmer (20 minutes' drive) has various top-rated swimming spots, so all that's left is to roll up and take your pick. There's also a fair bit to see in Gérardmer town (20 minutes): swan about here if you fancy lakeside orienteering or (once you've crossed everything) heading to the casino. Dreams of making it big crushed by the cruel hand of the croupier? Other local activities are just as invigorating and don't come with the hefty price tag. For cheaper sky-high thrills, chuck a picnic in the boot and take a spin along the scenic Route des Crêtes (30 minutes). Further high-altitude frolicking is in store at Bol d’Air adventure park (30 minutes), where the most intrepid travellers can free-dive onto an air-filled mattress. The riverside city of Colmar (an hour), meanwhile, is a strong contender for the title of Alsace's prettiest town.
