This peaceful place is a five-kilometre drive from the splendid Brittany coast, within easy driving distance of top tourist destinations like Saint-Malo, Dinard and Cap Frehel. The oyster town and old fishing port of Cancale is also a much-visited destination on the Brittany tourist trail: sample the oysters between September and April and potter around the many seafood restaurants and crustacean stalls at any time of year. To walk it all off, the coastal path from the town follows a circular route to the Pointe du Grouin with views across the bay towards Mont Saint-Michel. West of Plessix-Balisson and Dinard is Cap Fréhel, home of two lighthouses (the 17th-century one is the one to see, although the 1950s one is open to visitors). It's well worth the hike to the headland here too for the spectacular views of the rocky coast, crags and flocks of nesting seabirds. About 16 kilometres from base is the port of Erquy, with its spectacular sandy beaches and pink sandstone houses. As Cancale is the oyster capital, Erquy is the scallops one, landed by its dozens of trawlers harvesting the scallops banks first discovered here in the early 1960s.
