Soul Roots

Up for a bit of Aquitaine camping but don’t have the right kit (and secretly like just a bit of luxury for your holiday too)? Seek out a spot at micro-campsite Soul Roots, where a handful of rental tents are set up in a private and spacious garden area in a quiet Dordogne hamlet a couple of kilometres from Jumilhac-le-Grand. Everything here is set up ready and waiting for you – the traditional camping tents are kitted out with airbeds (made up ready for your arrival) and each one has its own dedicated toilet/shower cubicle with solar lighting (and loo roll and handwash provided). The communal facilities here have been very thoughtfully designed – especially the kitchen/dining area in a hand-built wooden building known as ‘The Bird Table’. Over here there’s a well-equipped kitchen (with ovens, a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster and a whole pile of crockery and utensils), plus space to eat at the breakfast bar. A ladder climbs up to a chillout space on the mezzanine with a couple of futons and low-level solar lighting. There are hammocks around the site for comfy siestas too – and of course the chance to bubble in the hot tub. Rather cook out in the open? All you need do is choose between the barbecue, the firepit and the traditional pizza oven – then serve your creations up at the outdoor seating area. And if you need to work up an appetite for your dinner, perhaps a game of pétanque or a swim in the outdoor saltwater pool will do the trick (it’s a lovely space surrounded by lavender, sunflowers and other plants… so you may well want to have a bit of a lounge there even if you don’t swim…)

Due to temporary direct road closure to the property, please contact them via text or phone call shortly before arrival for the latest update on the detour. (This only affects the final five kilometres of your journey.) As you drive up along the Route du Bost you will see a small sign saying Le Bost on the right; immediately after this you will see Soul Roots with large black metal gates on the left-hand side.

Lokale seværdigheder

With so much sorted out for you on site, you can get straight down to the important business of enjoying your holiday – perhaps starting with the 20-minute walk to Jumilhac-le-Grand to visit the medieval château and pick up tasty treats in the bakery, butcher shop and market. As this site is within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, there are plenty of places nearby for walks and bike rides in scenic wildlife-filled surroundings (look out for birds of prey and deer in particular). Alternatively, ride the old railway line at Velorail Perigord Vert or swing through the trees at Espace Hermeline (both half an hour’s drive). Also within easy reach are the cities of Périgueux and Limoges (both about an hour away), the chateaux of Hautefort (35 minutes) and Puyguilhem (45 minutes) and both the spectacular underground scenery of the Grotte de Villars (45 minutes) and the ancient cave paintings at the reconstructed Lascaux Cave (an hour).
