Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the north shore of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, The Dancing Moose is well-placed for refreshing outdoor breaks in this remote part of eastern Canada.
Originally settled by Scots in the early 1800s, this area is home to lots of wildlife, including the large lumbering moose that give this spot its name. Angling fans coming here for the fishing season (between May and July) have good prospects too, particularly if they go after the Atlantic crabs and lobsters often found hereabouts. Guests may well also spot whales, seals, oceangoing birds and a bald eagle who likes to pass this way for a daily fly-by or two.
This 3.7-acre site is bordered by a rocky pebble beach where it's simple to make a small campfire after dark. This is a quiet spot, with the greatest source of noise being the sea itself when the wind is up and the waves start slapping against the pebbles…
Facilities for overnight guests include wifi, warm showers and well-maintained toilets. The Dancing Moose's on-site café is another perk of staying here: filling breakfasts, tasty lunch options and lots of home-baked treats are available to pick up throughout the day. This on-site catering is also mighty convenient, as The Dancing Moose is roughly half an hour's drive from the closest full-sized supermarket.

Lokale seværdigheder
Here when there's snow on the ground? Carry on along the coast up to Cape Smokey (20 minutes' drive) if you're after cross-country skiing in a spectacular location. For more time immersed in nature, you could also head out for a driving tour of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, a well-preserved wildlife haven approximately half an hour away by road, or buckle up for a jaunt to the gorgeous Mary Ann Falls (55 minutes).
Other options include casting off to explore the open ocean with Ingonish Whale Watching (30 minutes), an experienced local tour operator that will do its best to showcase some of the Atlantic's biggest mammals.
Once back on dry land, it's up to you whether you opt for a brief spell in Baddeck (50 minutes), a superbly scenic town on the Bras d'Or lakes, or look to learn about Nova Scotia's rich history at the Giant MacAskill Museum (40 minutes) or North Highlands Community Museum (an hour and five minutes). And what better way to round off your trip than with a refreshing round of golf, perhaps at the dramatic Cape Breton Highlands Links (30 minutes)?
