Touring Botswana with a rucksack in tow? Drop it off at Mokolodi Backpackers, a well-maintained hostel with a peaceful vibe around half an hour outside Gaborone, then get ready to gaze at the rhinos, zebras and giraffes 20 minutes' walk away in the Mokolodi Nature Reserve.
Set in a rugged, semi-arid woodland ecoregion surrounded by indigenous plants, the hostel is a scenic self-catering choice with a communal kitchen and an outdoor swimming pool. It supplies fresh towels for drying off after using the hot water facilities and free wifi for uploading all those envy-inducing shots of the local animals.
Snap pictures of creatures during a game drive in the nature reserve, a non-profit that also offers rhino and giraffe tracking, bushwalking trips and birdwatching. Your main mission when at this hostel is to explore the Mokolodi Nature Reserve on a game drive or during a rhino and giraffe tracking experience. There are also bushwalking tours for boosting your chances of getting up-close sightings of birds and other small creatures.
Once you’ve had your fill of ambling with the animals, admire the authentic local wares in Gaborone’s Botswana Craft Centre (a 20-minute drive). The country’s capital is also the go-to spot for learning about the nation’s history – don’t miss The Three Dikgosi Monument, depicting a trio of important tribal chiefs, and the National Museum and Art Gallery.
Finish days out in decadent style with drinks at the Gaborone Yacht Club, a lovely location for a beverage or two. Alternatively, if you still have bags of energy to use up, climb the 1,287-metre Kgale Hill – known locally as "The Sleeping Giant" – for stunning city views.
