Wintersun Caravan and Tourist Park

For a mighty famed landmark, see if you can spot the giant satellite of the Big Dish, on Brown's Range a couple of kilometres from Wintersun (hint: it's quite large). This vast dish was the first earth station in all of Oz, used for communications for the Apollo Moon programme and for tracking Halley's Comet. The building itself isn't open to the public, but the dish is well worth a visit for the views of Carnarvon and the surrounding plantations from its site, and for a wander around the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, opened by astronaut Buzz Aldrin in 2012. More actively, a seven-kilometre drive will take you to the pretty pier of One Mile Jetty (also in the site pics, do have a peek), for tailor and mulloway fishing, wanders along its 1,493-kilometre length and then a ride back on the Coffee Pot Train. Sticking around into the evening for a spectacular sunset over the water is highly recommended around here too. Also recommended around Carnarvon and this part of Mid West Gascoyne are the four-wheel drive tours of the Kennedy Range and Mount Augustus National Park; swimming with humpback whales in Coral Bay; wildlife watching and boating in the UNESCO site of Ningaloo Coast, and helicopter rides over the Kennedy Range, national park or the southern end of Ningaloo Reef.
