Frankland River Retreat is an adults-only rural retreat on 83 acres set aside for exclusive guest use, right in the middle of Western Australia’s premium wine-growing region. The river flows along the site’s boundary, and you’ll wake up to bird song and uninterrupted views of paddocks and trees.
The Great Southern region is famed for its wine production, and there are several vineyards open for guided tours and (even better) tastings within a 15-minute drive. WA is also famous for its amazing sunsets – and as there’s practically no light pollution, the night sky around this romantic and remote spot is spectacular, with the Southern Cross often seen twinkling far above.
You can pick up supplies from the handy general store in Frankland River, but if you don’t feel like cooking, there’s a local takeaway service offering pizza and pasta dishes, as well as a community café that's just the spot for a strong coffee and a catch-up chat. Still in town, you’ll need to bring your own equipment to play on the tennis courts, and there’s a small skate park close by too.
Accommodation is in nifty wooden cabins, all of which are well laid-out with a kitchenette, an ensuite with shower, and a spacious living and sleeping area, making cosy retreats for loved-up couples. Oh – and air conditioning, a huge bonus during those long, hot summer days.

Lokale seværdigheder
It’s all about the wines in these parts, and there are numerous cellar doors open for tours and tastings – so why not spend a couple of days nosing around local vineyards? You can hop in the car and soon be tasting fine vintages at Alkoomi Vineyard (ask to sample their olive oil too), Ferngrove Wines (call ahead) and Lange Estate Winery (all 15 minutes’ drive).
Fancy a trip to the coast? Take a dip off the beaches in Albany (90 minutes), catch a few breaks on your surfboard or join a cruise with the chance to see migrating whales. If you’re keen to learn more about the city, there are displays at Albany’s Historic Whaling Station (an hour and 45 minutes) and world-war exhibits at the National Anzac Centre (an hour and 35 minutes).
For a real away-from-it-all outback experience, boot up for hikes up craggy Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Range National Park (an hour). Remote Porongurup National Park (an hour and 20 minutes) has spectacular driving routes past ancient granite domes, and you can see the forest canopy from above at The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk (90 minutes).
