Totally off-grid? Tick. Totally luxurious? Tick. Totally yours? Also tick. Close to the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, Ironbark House sits on a ridge with wilderness views towards Mount Mulligan and the Hann Tableland National Park. With faultless green credentials, this cool, contemporary bush retreat is powered by solar energy and harvests all its own water. Surrounded by 1,345 acres of private wilderness, the property has a population of kookaburras and cockatoos as well as its own colony of Mareeba rock-wallabies. On the inside of the cottage, all is smart, minimalist styling, designed for cosy groups of friends or family. There are two spacious ensuite bedrooms and a natty living space with gas oven and hob, a generous fridge and basics like tea and coffee in the kitchen (no power-hungry dishwashers and coffee machines here). Other 21st-century essentials include VAST TV as well as good mobile and internet reception (please note, there’s no wifi). Outside, two verandahs let you follow the sun (or the shade) by day, and there’s nothing better than chilling in the hammock as the sun sets and the local wildlife comes out to play – it can’t be promised, but you might just spot those rock wallabies. Later on, the alfresco seating and dining area is within stumbling distance for a long, leisurely evening around the barbecue. Out and about, you can explore marked trails by four-wheel drive, on horseback or mountain bike, or nature tours led by an experienced guide. Climb to the top of Ironbark Hill for spectacular outback views, or drive to one of the property’s dams to sit quietly and watch cotton pygmy geese congregate on the water.

Lokale seværdigheder

The local town of Dimbulah (15 minutes’ drive) has all the amenities you might need for an outback stay, from handy stores to a local pool, as well as Camp 64 Museum & Café, with its artefacts from Australia’s pioneering past. A day trip to Mount Mulligan (an hour’s drive) takes you to the scene of a mining disaster in 1921, for visits to the mine, cemetery and abandoned town, and there’s more mining history at Chillagoe (one hour 20 minutes), famous for its limestone caves, marble quarries and Aboriginal rock-art galleries in the Chillagoe – Mungana Caves National Park (one hour 30 minutes). Another fab day out takes you to the Atherton Tablelands (one hour 10 minutes), where stops might include lakes and waterfalls, the centuries-old Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra, or heritage houses in Herberton village. En route, stop off at farm shops for artisan ice creams, chocolate and cheese to enjoy back home at Ironbark House.
