Gather the family (or a handful of good friends) and head to Rydlan, a contemporary two-bedroom cabin in the countryside outside the seaside village of Borth (five minutes’ drive), in Ceredigion, West Wales. This bright, light-filled property sits next to a working farm, and you might well open the curtains in the morning to spot cattle grazing lazily in the adjacent field, not to mention distant sea views.
Rydlan has a double room and a bunk room, a bathroom (with a shower) and a well-equipped kitchen area with an induction hob, microwave oven and sink, plus assorted pans and utensils to whip up family meals that you can then devour in the dining area or outside. The outdoor area includes a paved patio with ample seating (overlooking the neighbouring hillsides) and a hot tub – just the spot to admire spectacular sunsets or the star-speckled night sky.
Days can be spent at Borth Beach, where kids can splash around in the shallow waters, or at the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve (15 minutes), a somewhat wilder landscape of sand dunes at the mouth of the River Dyfi (and a top spot for birdwatchers). The Wales Coast Path runs alongside Cardigan Bay and can be accessed on foot in about 20 minutes.

Rutevejledning
From Aberystwyth, take the turning for Borth at Rhydypennau. After Llandre, take the right turn for Dolybont (under the railway bridge). Drive through Dolybont over the humpback bridge, uphill and turn left at the blue Dolybont sign. Follow the road to the first farm. Once you have reached Brynllys Farm, Rydlan is located 180 degrees to your direction of travel adjacent to a big bale yard.

Just outside Borth, the Animalarium (10 minutes’ drive) is a sanctuary with wolf dogs, silver foxes and giant tortoises, plus a petting barn housing farmyard animals. Other animal-based experiences can be had at Dyfi Wildlife Centre – Cors Dyfi, a nature reserve with breeding ospreys, and at The Magic of Life Butterfly House (both 20 minutes).
In Aberystwyth (20 minutes), take the Cliff Railway (which is really a funicular) to the top of Constitution Hill for a game of miniature golf, a Camera Obscura experience and far-reaching views of the coastline. The Vale of Rheidol Railway runs on a narrow-gauge track to Devils Bridge, known for its dramatic waterfalls.
For a walk among the heather, head to Glaslyn Nature Reserve (45 minutes). There are no paths through this remote area of wilderness, so be sure to be equipped with wellies and a good sense of direction. Your pioneering spirit might be rewarded with sightings of hen harriers and skylarks.
