Oh what a beach is this… And what spectacular views, and outdoor activities, and long lazy days a-wandering among the coast, space and wildlife of this part of western Scotland – and you'll find the sunsets here are pretty special too. All this – and at least a few days' stay – can be had at Port Ban Holiday Park, set right on the mid-Argyll coastline near Kilberry with views over to the islands of Islay and Jura. It's a secluded setting here (natch), in beaut surroundings and in a wildlife haven: if you want to escape cities, traffic jams, noise and other life-based nasties, get along here forthwith. (One can also have campfires on the beach, so do get along here forthwith.) The site and its surrounds have loads of space for kids to run about safely, or you could all try a spot of rockpooling, or swimming, or going out in your own boat if you bring it, or ambling shoreside, or hiking, or canoeing, or fishing… all via quite a bit of tasty local Scottish food on the island and at seafood village Oban. The fishing village of Tarbert is within easy reach. Port Ban is a medium-sized site in a remote location, but has a good range of things to do for all ages, such as a big play area with fort, swings, slides, a fireman’s pole and a small climbing wall; a coffee bar with freshly ground coffee, home baking, light meals, snacks and fish and chips to eat in or take away; a quiet daytime lounge with a small library and a soft drinks bar, operating during evening entertainment, and a games hall with a pool and table tennis table, set near the café. Essentials are sorted too at the modern toilet block on the camping field with free hot showers, drying room and washroom all completely refurbished in 2013, and at the shop selling groceries, toys, fishing tackle, souvenirs, jewellery, stationery and stamps. Mountain bikes with helmets are available to hire for a small additional charge.

Lokale seværdigheder

You'll find heaps to do around the coast and countryside of Port Ban Holiday Park, from days by foot or pedal, to trips by car to the likes of Inveraray and Oban – and by passenger ferry to Ireland from Campbelltown and Ardrossan. Try the fishing village of Tarbert as a starter, followed by seafood at the Kilberry Inn, and then the next day a spot of walking, cycling or boating at the Crinan canal? If you're around with kids, the Scottish Beaver Trial in Knapdale Forest is an excellent option for an outdoorsy day. For history, the Kilmartin Museum covers the 150+ archaeological sites along this part of western Scotland; see one for yourself at Dunadd, the Iron Age and then hill fort that's thought to have been the capital of the ancient kingdom of Dál Riata (standing on top surveying your kingdom is very much recommended here). Day trips by ferry can be had to the islands of Arran, Gigha, Islay, Jura, Mull/Iona and Colonsay as well as to the Cowal peninsula; day trips by car include to the castle and jail of Inveraray; the seafood and sealife of Oban; the surf beach and splendid golf course of Machrihanish, and Easdale village for sea safari and high speed boat trips.
