Countryside or seaside? Stroll among both with a stay at St Osyth Beach Holiday Park, a Park Holidays site on the Essex sunshine coast near the seaside resort of Clacton-on-Sea. It’s a mere pebble throw away from the beach on one side and the greenery of the Essex countryside on the other, with Clacton-on-Sea a quick drive away – or a leisurely amble along the beach front. For staying on site, the park is packed with things to do for all ages and tastes: there’s a freshwater fishing lake right at hand to land some slippery characters, and an all-weather sports court for those feeling a bit more energetic. Children can go loopy at the kids’ clubs with games, dances and competitions, try the race track in the amusement arcade, or flounder around on the flumes in the indoor heated pool complex; there’s a shallow splash area for tiddlers too, and a poolside seating area for getting your breath back. Hungry after all that? There’s a food bar on site for having your dinner dished up to you, as well as a mini mart for basic bits and bobs for cooking in your caravan. You can also take it easy in the family bar, where there’s Sky TV and free wifi, or jazz things up a little at the evening entertainment – the kids will love it if you take to the stage for the karaoke... Guests at St Osyth Beach can use the facilities of the two sister Park Holiday sites in the area: just across the road is Seawick Holiday Park with a 1950s-style café and the Essex Seagull Bar & Grill, while there’s more fishing and a children’s adventure playground at Oaklands.

Lokale seværdigheder

As it’s the sunshine coast, beachcombing and seaside resorts are the order of the day here, with Clacton-on-Sea almost on the doorstep and Southend-on-Sea a little further down the coast. Promenade along the lengthy Clacton Pier for rides, amusements, cafés and restaurants or bounce about on the giant trampolines, roll some indoor bowls along or visit the SeaQuarium to see local marine specimens as well as not-so-local red piranha fish and sharks. Sea fishing and boat trips can be arranged from the pier too. Clacton-on-Sea is also famous for its annual air show where you can spot Spitfires and Hurricanes; there’s a bit of history here too for soap fans as the Clacton-on-Sea Butlins was where Eastenders’ star-crossed lovers Frank and Paaaaaat met all those years ago. Aw. Moving swiftly on, the longest leisure pier on the planet can be seen at nearby Southend-on-Sea: it’s over 2km long and is now Grade II listed. The kids likely won’t care about the historical elements of the pier, so take them on the pier railway instead or let them loose on the rides of Adventure Island. Day trips from St Osyth include the historic city of Colchester, just eleven miles away and with over 250 species to spot at Colchester Zoo; flapping around and birdwatching at the nature reserves in the area, or exploring the Suffolk Heritage Coastline with its seaside towns and villages. The East Anglian Railway Museum in Constable Country at nearby Colne has regular events including Thomas the Tank Engine days, railway experience trips and a miniature railway: try the ‘driver for a fiver’ to get your mitts on the controls.
