Serenely sustainable and with plenty of room to roam, family-run Earth Camp has good basic facilities and direct access to gorgeous woodland. A mile outside of the peaceful village of Chailey in the rural East Sussex hinterland, this well-placed spot is also half an hour's drive from Brighton and the coast. The site's environmentally friendly focus is another big plus: the well-maintained composting toilets, washing-up basins and shower blocks are, for example, almost entirely made out of recycled wood. And there's also the fact that your pitch is within easy strolling distance of a wildlife-packed woodland, which looks particularly gorgeous in spring when the forest floor bursts into bluebell-coloured bloom. Any kids you've brought along can stay safely within the confines of the site and get up to games among the trees, while those hoping for farther-ranging adventures should bring walking boots or bikes and set off along the range of paths that are directly accessible from base. Chailey Common Nature Reserve, a popular spot for such jaunts, is just a couple of fields away, and it's a 20-minute walk along footpaths to Newick, which has three pubs, a bakery, a butcher's and a convenience store. Games to borrow include a badminton set, football goals, a table tennis table, croquet, cricket, boules and Kubb. On-site massages and reiki are available, as well as yoga and sound baths every Saturday. For a lovely outdoor evening, this site allows campfires and barbecues, with wood and kindling available to buy if you need a bit of help getting your blaze burning. It also has an artisan coffee van which sells pastries on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and a woodfired pizza oven which serves a wide range of pizzas on Saturday evenings. Finally, feel free to bring well-behaved dogs along – they'll find a very warm welcome here.

Syntes om Laid back vibe at the campsite. Opportunity to do things like yoga and have a massage. Spacious bell tents. The location. The showers and the eco friendly show gels/shampoo. The pizza van - delicious pizzas.

Syntes ikke om Whilst I understand the need for compost toilets on a campsite, they did get a bit smelly on a hot weekend. I think an additional hand washing/tooth brushing area near the entrance toilets would have been good. Shame the food van wasn't there on our visit.

Lovely peaceful site surrounded by nature.

Syntes om Peaceful location, well thought out facilities, very clean, friendly and helpful.
Close to Charleston House. Lewes. Good for exploring. Massage available at short notice.

Syntes om There's lot to like about Earth Camp, we had beautiful weather & enjoyed a clear star filled sky, the fire pits were there to use the logs & kindling were reasonably priced, the Host was friendly, other campers seemed to be relaxed so no problems whatsoever. The place has a nice peacful vibe. The site itsef is pretty hilly as you would expect on the South Downs, there are some flat pitches to be found, the toilets & showers are great. theres bark chipping on the ground to avoid it geting muddy & although quiet there's a festival feel to the site with nice touches here & there, the location from where i am in SW London is ideal for an overnight getaway.

Syntes ikke om having to get up 3 times in three night to pee but thats nobodies fault but my own..

Excellent site - would thorughly recommend.

Syntes om Wondeful place to stay. Lovely surroundings and very helpful owners. Good facilities (compost toilets, water, showers etc) as well a sauna and massage services available. Lovely pub about 20 mins walk away. Only stayed for one night but wished it was more - will definitely return.

Great place to get away from it all and bask in nature.

Syntes om Friendly and helpful staff. Clean facilities. Lots of mirrors which you don’t find at most sites. Eco friendly. Great choice of games and activities.

Syntes ikke om Steep hill down to the facilities, didn’t bother me but maybe not a site for those that are not as physical. Drinking water only from taps in shallow sinks which made it hard to fill up anything but small bottles. Surrounding by trees and nature but a shame to hear motorway traffic in the background.

Syntes om As it was just after the summer holidays, it was very quiet but just what I needed, so peaceful and tranquil with just the squirrels and birds for company. I loved the rustic compost loos and washing up stations, all in a beautiful setting and I hope to go back next summer when the reiki and yoga classes are on.

Lokale seværdigheder

Looking for a spot to get up to some kayaking or wild swimming? Park up at Barcombe Mills (10 minutes' drive) to explore the river Ouse and reservoir. Perhaps you'll find yourself paddling upriver in the direction of a waterside pub like The Anchor Inn (10 minutes), where you can also hire a boat if you haven't brought your own. If sticking to dry land is preferable to messing around in boats, check out the mid-century steam trains that serve the four stations on the Bluebell Railway (10 minutes). Alternatively, head into Brighton (30 minutes) and sail down the esplanade on Volk’s Electric Railway. Lewes (15 minutes) should also make your to-do list: its 11th-century Norman Castle, priory ruins and connections to Anne of Cleves should sort the historical component of your visit, while catching a show at Glyndebourne Opera (10 minutes outside of town or 20 minutes from base) should please to those curious about culture. And the kids? They'll be sorted at Drusillas Park (30 minutes).
