Got a bike? Get on it and pedal over to Dalesbridge, a cycle-friendly site between the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland. Spacious and family-run, it is within half an hour's drive of all three Yorkshire Three Peaks for hikes up Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. First things first, though, head to the on-site shop to collect some local information and a map of the local area; many walking and cycling routes begin directly from the site. There is lockable bike storage on site for your valued two-wheeled vehicles, as well as a cycle wash area so you can hose the mud off after long days up hills and down dales. Half an hour’s drive away is the Gisburn Forest, where mountain bikers of all ages, fitness and nerve can pedal a route to suit. The Dales trails and Bowland bike paths aren't the only thing to look forward to, as Dalesbridge is a peaceful family site with spectacular scenery in all directions. There’s ample room, staff who are happy to help, and most importantly for mountain roamers returning with a thirst, a fully licensed bar (open at certain times). There is also a pizza oven and an on-site shop, where you can stop off for coffee, rolls and pastries at the weekend. Based in Austwick, the site is a 10-minute drive from the historic local market town Settle which has shops and supermarkets. The Settle-Carlisle railway is also a short drive away.

Syntes om: Great site.Location is superb for walking. Cross the road and within minutes you are in Austwick from where you can walk to Clapham, Ingleborough cave, Norber Erratics, Feizor, Stainforth etc. Pitches are level, toilets and showers and pot wash areas are excellent.

Syntes ikke om: Not really a fault of the site but our stay was again marred by the usual negligent idiotic dog owners that seem to be everywhere nowadays - so more a societal problem than a problem with the site.To their credit the site does display clear signs that say ‘keep your dogs on leads even on your pitch’ but nobody on the site administers a simple reading test to those that turn up with dogs to make sure that they can actually read and understand these signs, and are willing to comply, because quite a few clearly don’t. It’s a large site so maybe it could be split into a doggy half and a non doggy half for those that don’t enjoy unleashed dogs leaping up at them, late night barking, and the inevitable poo that these off the lead hounds leave behind.

Syntes om: Site condition, location, ease of checking in & support with a longer power cable. No faults at all & will definitely go there again.

Syntes ikke om: Trying to get a beer at the pub when people were checking in as the reception was closed (Saturday afternoon) . The lady serving was working her socks off & very nice but drowning. Gave up in the end after two drinks & went back to the tent.

Syntes om: Well drained gravel pitch with fabulous open views. Plenty of loos and showers, no queuing! Loads of space for kids to explore and play, the bar was great and the pizzas delicious. Good to meet Ross the owner and hear about future plans for the site, we wish them every success. We only had 2 nights but would happily have stayed longer!

Rutevejledning

Dalesbridge campsite is just off the main A65 road between Ingleton and Settle. Do not drive into Austwick. If travelling from the Settle direction the site is past the Austwick sign on the lefthand side of the road: turn into the entrance directly before the Dalesbridge sign. If travelling from Ingleton the site is just past the second turning into the village of Austwick; turn right after the crossroads. Satnav: please note that our entrance is directly off the A65: do not turn up Orcaber Lane!

Lokale seværdigheder

Starting 10 minutes away, the walk to Ingleton Falls is gentle but rewarding, and even though you’re heading deep down instead of up, the caverns and wild rock formations of Whitescar and Ingleborough caves make for unmissable wanders. For walks with wildlife, make the half-hour trip to Malham Cove, where a pair of nesting peregrine falcons can be spotted in the summer months, alongside resident populations of jackdaws and housemartins. You can climb the massive amphitheatre cliffs of the cove, or follow trails up and around taking in the glacial Malham Tarn and Janet’s Foss waterfall. To see some wildlife at closer quarters, the Settle Falconry Centre (five minutes' drive) has daily displays of flying and feeding and if you feel you’d like to soar through the skies, the Ribble Viaduct section of the Settle-Carlisle Railway makes a fair imitation. If all this outdoor, high altitude stuff has made you peckish, head over to the Wensleydale Creamery (40 minutes) to learn how the famed crumbly cheese is made… and then sample some, but of course.
