With wanders through Wensleydale on your doorstep, Thorney Mire Woodland Retreat is an excellent place to see some of the greenest and most gorgeous corners of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Located in a private woodland, this cosy shepherd's hut is in a secluded spot just outside the small village of Appersett and roughly a mile and a half from the attractive market town of Hawes. This is a wildlife haven, and you may see species such as roe deer and rare red squirrels – keep an eye on the special squirrel feeder opposite the hut, as the creatures visit for a snack most days. Several footpaths are accessible in the immediate vicinity for trips through the surrounding countryside too. The characterful glamping unit is gorgeous inside and out and comes with handy facilities including a small private bathroom – with an eco toilet, shower, basin and heated towel rail – as well as a double bed, a small kitchen, tables and chairs, power sockets and complimentary tea/coffee and toiletries. Outside, a table, chairs, a barbecue and a chiminea have all been set up to help you make the most of this pretty rural location.

Syntes om: We had an awesome time, so relaxing with excellent walks on the doorstep. There is so much wildlife that visits the hut, it really is a photographer's dream. We saw our first red squirrel within a few minutes of arrival and then spotted woodpeckers, owls, nuthatches and wood pigeons too. The hut was clean, comfortable and well equipped, and the hosts were lovely. Book with confidence.

Rutevejledning

Directions: You will find us at around the midpoint of the single track lane that leads between the hamlet of Appersett on the A684 and the B6255, the Hawes to Ingleton road. We are next door to Thorney Mire House, which is marked on some maps. From the A1 and the East: Exit the A1 at junction 51. Take second exit of the roundabout onto the A684. At the next roundabout turn right remaining on the A684, signposted to Leyburn. Follow A684 through Leyburn, until you reach Hawes (about 50 minute drive). Continue on the A684 through Hawes towards Sedburgh. After 1 mile you will come to Appersett. Drive through the small hamlet of Appersett, just before the river bridge turn left and bear right immediately. You will see our little sign on the wall in front of you. Follow the single lane road upwards, after 1/3 mile you go under the old viaduct, we are the first building you come to a further 1/2 mile on. The parking area is against the building just off the road and adjacent to the entrance door. Beware: some Sat Nav’s mysteriously direct you to Scotch Corner, then the A66 and then via Kirkby Stephen which is a much longer route!! From M6 Heading North Leave the M6 at Junction 34 and head for Hawes via Ingleton by turning left on to the A683 at the end of the slip road sign posted to Kirby Lonsdale. After 10 miles turn right on to the A687 to Ingleton, the turning is on a sharp bend immediately after a narrow bridge. As you approach Ingleton pick up the Hawes signs. 15 miles after Ingleton and 2 miles before Hawes there is a house on the right (the first on the right for several miles) continue for 400 metres to a left turn. Take this turn and follow the single track lane for half a mile. After a 90 degree left turn you will see buildings ahead, pass the first building (Thorney Mire House) and take the 90 degree right bend then pull up immediately on to the road side parking area, the entrance door is adjacent to the parking area. This route is approx 30 minutes shorter than going up to J37. From M6 Heading South Leave the M6 at Junction 37 and head for Hawes through Sedburgh, on the A684. As you leave Sedburgh look out for the right hand turn that is signposted to Hawes. 14 miles on from Sedburgh is the hamlet of Appersett. As you approach Appersett you cross 2 river bridges. Immediately after the second bridge turn right, and bear right immediately. You will see our little sign on the wall in front of you. Follow the single lane road upwards, after 1/3 mile you go under the old viaduct, we are the first building you come to a further 1/2 mile on. The parking area is against the building just off the road and adjacent to the entrance door.

Lokale seværdigheder

Hawes is just over a mile away and can be easily reached on foot. Head here to pootle around its independent shops, pubs, restaurants, museums and tea rooms, or head to the Wensleydale Creamery for a dairy-themed day out (and to sample some of the local area's famous crumbly cheese, of course). There are many popular hiking trails within easy reach if you need to walk off that cheese, including the Pennine Way, a long-distance trail a short distance from the hut. The Yorkshire Three Peaks are also very accessible if you fancy a challenge, with the nearest of them being Ingleborough (2,372 ft; 30 minutes ) and Pen-y-ghent (2,277 ft; 30 minutes). Of course, the active life is best counterbalanced with more relaxing pursuits from time to time. With that in mind, you might like to drive out to Kirkby Lonsdale (30 minutes), roughly at the midpoint of the Settle to Carlisle railway, for a scenic train journey through Yorkshire and Cumbria. Alternatively, head to Kendal (45 minutes' drive) or Skipton (an hour) on market day and see if you can snag a bargain, or relax in the landscaped grounds of Sizergh Castle (45 minutes), a well-preserved National Trust property on the southern edge of the Lake District.
