The part of Herefordshire that’s close to the England/Wales border is a particularly fine area for an outdoor break – it puts you within easy reach of days wandering around Hereford, poking around the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, paddling down the River Wye or hiking through the Black Mountains. If that sounds enticing enough, how about a place to stay that’s got not only its own restaurant but also a traditional cider mill? That’s the tempting offer at Gwatkin Red Cow Campsite, a well-maintained site with lovely views across the area known as the Golden Valley. Settle in for a stay here and you can fill your days with all sorts of adventures before getting back to a shower, a fresh pint of award-winning cider and a meal in the restaurant, which serves up a range of home-cooked dishes to hungry travellers. Handily, it’s also open for cooked breakfasts, lunches (including an excellent Sunday roast) and afternoon pick-me-ups with coffee and cake. At times when the restaurant isn’t open, you’ve got the option of getting your barbecue going; there’s a butcher 10 minutes’ drive away for top-notch local meat, or a couple of supermarkets 20 minutes away in Hereford. And of course you can still wash it down with a couple of bottles of cider from the shop on site… Things have been kept fairly simple on the pitches here, but you’ll have access to toilets and showers, and are welcome to bring dogs along to join your break.

En fredelig, venlig campingplads i en dejlig frugthave på en aktiv cidergård. Ren, velholdt faciliteter, ofte i ombyggede svinestier. God restaurant, fremragende hjemmelavet cider, rummelige pladser, smuk udsigt. Nogle ønsker små opgraderinger og flere strømstik.

Syntes ikke om We were not told there was a wedding taking place the next day. Please advise your guests of this in future, at least give them the option to cancel.
We were told this by a less than interested man in the shop when we arrived and when I asked if there were many more camping, he said 2 others.
This was a lie, multiple wedding guests turned up to camp and it was so ridiculously noisy Friday night between 23:30 and 02:00, they had a speaker playing music so loud as well as the noise from generally being drunk.
We packed up Saturday morning and booked in to a gorgeous guest house 30mins away. The same man in the shop couldn’t have cared less that we weren’t happy and they obviously prioritise money over their guests enjoyment.

Syntes ikke om We were looking forward to staying in the orchard after looking at previous reviews however there was a wedding so were told we were unable to stay in there, would have appreciated being advised prior to our visit we stayed in bottom field ,grass was long unlike the orchard, we were v disappointed hence only staying one out of the 3 nights booked

Syntes om A couple of returning campers (25 year gap), so a spur of the moment booking to have a short break in lovely weather.
Welcome on arrival, and ice cold cider to boot. The Facilities were very clean and tidy, with plenty of space to pitch in the orchard with some shade.

Syntes om We are the only van in the site, was lovely quiet site. Basic amenities but very clean and fab use of an old pig shed. Lawrence was delightful.

Syntes om A great place to get away. Nice clean toilets and showers. Great food in the lovely Red cow Restaurant. Plus not forgetting the award winning ciders 😛. Very friendly staff.

Syntes om The cider – Try them all! Every flavour was delicious, but the Elderflower was my favourite.

The restaurant – The food was amazing. We have two coeliacs in the family, and knowing the chef had personal experience with coeliac disease completely put our minds at ease. We were able to relax and really enjoy our meals. The quality of produce used was excellent.

The facilities – All clean and conveniently located.

Camping space – There’s loads of room to set up, whether you want to pitch in the orchard or the field.

The people – All the staff and owners were genuinely friendly and welcoming.

Location – Super easy to find and get to.

Syntes om Great location, good facilities. Very friendly. They make their own cider which is superb. Had breakfast and Sunday roast, during the few days we stayed there, both were excellent. Real history to the farm.

Walking is a real treat around here – favourite spots nearby include the Cat’s Back (half an hour’s drive) and Hay Bluff (35 minutes), as well as the hour-long walk from the site to Dore Abbey. For other outdoor activities, try canoeing from Symonds Yat (35 minutes), horse riding/pony trekking with Noakes Farm Riding Centre (50 minutes) or go-karting at Herefordshire Raceway (half an hour). For something a little less strenuous, take walks around National Trust site The Weir Garden and Brobury House Gardens (both 20 minutes), or sign up for a llama trekking experience with Golden Valley Llamas (10 minutes). A day spent exploring the many bookshops of Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes) is usually a good idea too, as is one wandering around the city of Hereford (25 minutes), taking in the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Black and White Museum – and maybe also the Museum of Cider?
