As well as battlefields and Roman forts, there are dozens of other sites of historical and cultural interest in the UK. Our listings feature some of the main ones, along with details of where you can camp nearby. Whether your interest is Kew Gardens or Stonehenge, you can find a heritage site within reach of almost any UK campsite.

Alternatively, start by searching for all holiday parks and campsites within 15 miles of a World Heritage site.

The World Heritage Centre has 27 major sites around the UK, and sites such as Heritage Britain give details of smaller sites from gardens to castles.

Everyone has heard of Stonehenge, one of the World Heritage Centre's major sites. Check out Stonehenge itself or go to Avebury, 25 miles away. Camping is available near both sites. Check out Shropshire Ironbridge, which recently celebrated the 300th anniversary of the first smelting of iron and coke, credited with kick-starting the Industrial Revolution. Its website has full details of events for the rest of the year's celebrations, including an Artistic Blacksmith Event in August.

If you're a Roman history buff, head north to the Roman Limes, Britain's part of the 5000km border line from Britain to Africa. Hadrian's Wall Country is the perfect place to see, with dozens of sites, museums and forts, and has plenty of accommodation nearby. Or go to one of Britain's hundreds of castles, from the 11th century Durham Castle and Cathedral to any one of the 100 still standing in Wales.

Pick what you want to see, and we'll show you where you can stay!
