As the dainty bluebells herald the arrival of warmer weather, it’s time to book an outdoor holiday to make the most of the fresh air and clear skies, says Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates.
Dan Yates said: "There is no better time to enjoy a camping and caravanning holiday than in the spring when the weather is warming up and nature is bursting into life – it’s an inspiring time. We have amazing places to stay across the British Isles including accommodation within bluebell fields. Sites are freshly opened and looking great, and it’s still relatively quiet in terms of visitor numbers so prices during the early parts of spring are very competitive: it’s the perfect holiday season."
Pitchup.com has over 500 bookable camping and caravanning sites throughout the UK, a number of which are within, or in close proximity to, beautiful woodlands with carpets of bluebells. This spectacular sight comes just once a year and is not around for too long so getting out and about in May is essential.
Yates has selected some of his favourites sites from the many on offer:
Grinton Lodge Youth Hostel Camping Pods, Swaledale, Yorkshire
Formerly an impressive gentlemen's shooting lodge, this property has been converted into a youth hostel complete with modern and stylish camping pods. Set within picturesque Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, visitors will find that the pods are literally located right within a beautiful bluebell woodland. Each pod comes with lighting, heating and mains electric plus the delightful scent of bluebell vapour surrounding the area. Visitors can make use of the hostel’s facilities for everything else they need including toilets, showers, lounge with log fire, TV room, games room, drying room and kitchen. Outside there are gardens to explore and an adventure playground for children. The hostel also offers cooked breakfast and evening meals for an additional charge. Pods cost from £40 per night and sleep two.
Little Oak Yurts – near to Garston Woods, Dorset
Little Oak Yurts at Moonfleet Farm Campsite in Dorset is just a short distance from Garston Woods, one of The Woodland Trust’s top 10 bluebell walks. In spring the woods are alive with the colours and scents of bluebells and wild garlic. It’s also a nature and bird reserve where visitors can get involved in all types of activities.
The site at Little Oak Yurts features a choice of yurts or a shepherd’s hut, all of which are located in a spacious field with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The yurts can sleep up to four adults or a family of five, while the shepherd’s hut is a romantic option for couples. With modern shower facilities and fully furnished accommodation this small and friendly site is perfect for a peaceful break.
The shepherd’s hut costs from £120 for a two night stay while the yurts cost from £280 for two nights.
Woodland Park Camping Huts – Ellesmere, Shropshire
Shropshire is a county that is renowned for its bluebells with multiple parks, woodlands and gardens in which to explore them. Woodland Park Camping Huts is located right in the centre of the county making it an ideal base for exploring. The site is made up of just five cosy camping huts set around a woodland pond. This camping hideaway is the perfect escape from urban life where visitors are more likely to encounter birds, badgers, polecats, squirrels and foxes than other humans. The rustic huts come with bunk beds, a table, bench and electricity. The rest is down to the imagination of guests as to what they choose to bring. Washing facilities are provided in a communal shower block. A four berth hut costs just £70 for two nights, working out at less than £9 per person, per night.
