Time to escape from the Big Apple for a bit of country air without even needing to leave New York state? Drive north for a couple of hours and you’ll get to SoHi Campground, a fully serviced site in a secluded wooded property about 15 minutes’ drive from Accord. Whether you’re just coming for an overnight, staying the weekend or settling in for a longer while, this is a rewarding place to pitch up, with lots of space to relax and plenty of leisure facilities. Those facilities include an outdoor pool, a small lake for boating and fishing, and sports facilities including miniature golf, horseshoe pits and basketball and volleyball courts. Campfires in firepits are welcome and there are plenty of picnic tables for your outdoor meals. There’s also a recreation hall that often hosts events such as film nights, pot luck gatherings and parties. In high season the site often organises regular barbecues where guests can mingle. Of course, you may well want to spend some time exploring the area while you’re here – and there are plenty of ways to do that, including hiking, biking, climbing and touring local towns or farms.

Llocs d'interès

Those of you that like to bike or hike can hit the trails in the Mohonk Preserve or Minnewaska State Park Preserve (both 25 minutes’ drive). Sam's Point nature area (40 minutes) has world-class views and rock climbing in the Shawangunk Mountains (Gunks) is very popular. Bikers have miles of country roads and there is a nearby mountain biking park. For something a bit more leisurely, the towns of Woodstock and New Paltz (both 25 minutes) are nice places to wander, dropping into restaurants, record stores and antique shops as you go. There are also several farms and wineries to visit nearby – meet farm animals at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary (10 minutes), explore all sorts of kid-friendly activities at Kelder’s Farm (15 minutes) and try some local drinks at Robibero Winery (half an hour). Of course, if you’re not using this place as an escape from NYC, you may like to spend a day exploring the attractions of the world-famous city – you can drive down there in about two hours.
