Might this be one of the most handsome Spanish towns you'll ever clap eyes upon? Quite possibly. Part of Spain's fab northern coast, the historic fishing town of Ribadesella is a place of two halves, broken up by the mouth of the Sella river – and edged by the golden sandy beach of Playa Santa Marina.
A 600-metre stroll from the sands and a 15-minute walk from town lies friendly and family-friendly Camping Playa Sauces, a topping spot to settle down in for some Asturias sea and sand, or to rest your weary feet for a night or two if you're hiking the Camino de Santiago. Surfing and river kayaking are easy to access from here, and the spectacular Picos de Europa mountain range edges Ribadesella for day trips to do some intrepid hiking.
Playa Sauces is also about a kilometre and a half from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cueva de Tito Bustillo, famed throughout Spain – and beyond – as the setting for some splendid prehistoric cave art in a place inhabited by humans for tens of thousands of years. (Go: these are a must.)
Site facilities include a small café-restaurant serving up local dishes, a food shop, a playground, a TV room and a wifi area, plus a heated amenities block.

As well as the golden beach 600 metres away and splendid Ribadesella within 15 minutes' walk, guests at Camping Playa Sauces are within easy reach of outdoor activities like hiking the Picos de Europa, cycling, surfing and sailing from Santa Marina, or taking a kayak out on the Sella. (If you're around in early August, the International Descent of the River Sella/ Descenso Internacional del Sella is a Most Important date on the Spanish canoeing calendar.)
The Cueva de Tito Bustillo a mile from base is a must-see for its prehistoric wall art dating back 40,000 years; further afield are the cities of Gijon (60 kilometres) and Oviedo (80 kilometres).
