Road tripping around South Africa’s Western Cape? Dust off the day with a dip in the dams on Op-Die-Plaas Kamp, a working farm where guests will be welcomed warmly by the family owners. The site’s a splendid place to rest – especially if you want tips on travelling the Koueveld area, as clan father Frits grew up here and has a wealth of knowledge to share with holidaymakers when he’s not off working the land.
Ask about walks around the grounds or further on, past animals ranging from sheep to cattle; the wild mountain scenery of the Klein Swartberg mountain range forms the backdrop on one side, with plenty of open space and leafy surrounds too.
While the rural setting makes Op-Die-Plaas Kamp it feel like a haven deep in the countryside, it’s not so far up Route 323 linking the big N1 and Route 62 roads. It’s also almost opposite the turnoff for Amalienstein, a town a 35-minute drive away for trips to an unusual church with yellowwood pews.
Closer still is the scenic Seweweekspoort Pass (15 minutes), through which travellers twist and turn for 17 kilometres on a narrow road flanked by sheer rock. Hiking and biking also lure visitors to this area, especially in the Towerkop Nature Reserve less than a 10-minute drive.

Always wanted to try some of South Africa’s famed wine? You can head off on a trip past the Towerkop Nature Reserve to Calitzdorp (55 minutes away) for tastings and tours at various cellar doors from this park.
Further along is Oudtshoorn (an hour and 25 minutes), known for its ostrich farms where visitors can take to tractors for tours around fields filled with big birds. If you’re really taken by these creatures, you could also head to the C.P Nel Museum to see ostrich-themed exhibits as well as bits and bobs about local history.
More animals are over in the Cango Wildlife Ranch, also an hour and 25 minutes' drive, with cheetah and lemur encounters (along with croc-cage diving for particularly fearless visitors).
If Cape Town’s the final destination on your hol, detour to Bontebok National Park (two hours and 15 minutes’ drive) and amble alongside the antelopes that roam here.
