There’s a selection of super sandy beaches to while away your time on along this southern part of Sicily’s coastline – should you tire of the beach right by your site, you can set your sights instead on Sampieri (10 minutes’ drive away), Pozzallo (15 minutes) or the lengthy stretch 25 minutes away at Donnalucata (a splendid spot for surfing and windsurfing if there’s a breeze). If you like to combine chilling out with a bit of poking around historic sites, you’ve come to the right place – take your pick from baroque churches in Scicli, the troglodyte village at Cava d’Ispica (both about half an hour away) and the historic centre of Ragusa, 40 minutes away. A little further afield at an hour’s drive, Syracuse is well worth the trip to see the Neapolis archaeological park, Greek theatre and museums. Should the bambini be looking less than enthused at the prospect of ancient wanderings, aim instead for Modica, half an hour away, where the historic centre is home to a cluster of excellent chocolate shops.
