Domes! Yes, the spectacular, splendid Charente-Maritime site of Au Pays des Bulles deserves an exclamation mark. Geodesic and transparent domes, to be globally exact, clustered in the grounds of a family-owned property just outside Montendre, an hour from the beaches of the Gironde estuary and from Bordeaux.
Flick through the pics first to see just how fab these spheres are: 'breath taking' and 'could not recommend highly enough' are only a couple of guest platitudes heaped on the accommodation here. You can drift off to sleep – in a real bed – watching the stars, or set up on the spacious wooden deck around the domes to watch the birds in the treetops above, perhaps with a glass of something from one of the area's vineyards... And in the morning? Your breakfast hamper will be delivered to your door.
If you can tear yourself away from looking up into the sky, there's plenty to do in the surrounding area: perhaps wander around nearby Château de Montendre, laze on the lakeside beach or play in the wave pool and waterslides at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark.

Llocs d'interès
The domes are a kilometre and a half from Montendre, home to 11th-century Château de Montendre on a rocky spur overlooking heathland, the town and Double forest. There's an arts and culture museum at the castle; back in town, take a guided walk from the tourist office around Montendre's old buildings and medieval streets.
Montendre also has a lake edged with 10 hectares of pine trees for woodland wanders, as well as pedalo boat and canoe hire by the water and a lakeside beach that's lifeguarded in July and August. Night markets are held in town every Tuesday evening in summer.
By car, it's half an hour to watery days at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark, and about 55 minutes to beaches at Talmont and Meschers on the Gironde estuary. Bordeaux, its Golden Triangle and its wine museum are reachable in about an hour.
