What a splendid spot this is for a holiday en famille – within ambling distance of the beach, with loads to do in the surrounding area and plenty to keep kids happy on site.
Au Petit Port de L’Houmeau isn't actually that petite, being spread across grounds of more than three hectares. It's in the resort of L’Houmeau, five kilometres north of La Rochelle, with all the town’s amenities (restaurants, bakeries and the like) a short walk away. Hire bikes on site and you can get to the city centre in around 20 minutes, or hit the coastal cycle path to get to the excellently bike-friendly Île de Ré in half an hour or so.
When not roaming round the region, guests can spend time on site playing games of beach volleyball, pétanque or table tennis, splashing about in the heated pool or working out with a gym or zumba class (and thereby earning a second helping of ice cream…).
That ice cream isn’t very far away – just stroll over to the snack bar to pick some up, along with drinks, meals and snacks to take away or have on the semi-shaded terrace. Fresh bread can be picked up here of a morning, and the site also has a communal barbecue area with picnic tables for those who fancy sizzling up their own eats.

Llocs d'interès
Wander west for 10 minutes or so from the site and you’ll hit the coast: the nearest beach is a quiet pebbly stretch with lush views and safe swims. Stroll a little further up the coast (around 10 minutes) to the fishing village of Plomb, where you can sample local seafood including fresh oysters.
Perhaps the best way to get around these parts is to hire bikes on site (adult and kids’ bikes available, plus trailers for the tinies). Take them off to Île de Ré for a fab day of cycling around some of the island’s 110 kilometres of bike path, taking in dunes, lighthouses and historic fortifications as you pedal, and maybe stopping off for watersports including sailing and kitesurfing.
Also easily accessed by bike is La Rochelle, where you can potter around the old port, visit the maritime museum and see the sea life at the excellent aquarium.
