A kota is a wooden conical hut used in Finland, but Kota Désiré owners Jennifer and Mickaël have imported this traditional Scandinavian accommodation to the Vosges.
And what a great place Kota Désiré is for a holiday among the alpine lakes and forested mountains in this corner of north-western France. First of all, it is at the top end of the glamping spectrum: fully furnished, with a large double bed and and a single bed; a well-equipped kitchen corner (with all the basics, plus a raclette machine and fondue set for the cheese enthusiast in your family); a dining area; and a stylish bathroom with a shower cubicle and a composting toilet. Second of all, it is surrounded by lush greenery, which you can enjoy while relaxing on well-padded sun loungers.
However, arguably the best perk here is the unlimited access to the wood-fired hot tub – just the spot for a little stargazing, perhaps with a glass of Alsatian Riesling in hand… Towels, bathrobes and washable slippers are included. Also included are the basics for a hot drink (coffee, tea, herbal tea…); for anything else you might need, the nearest supermarkets are in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges (five minutes’ drive), which also has a good range of dining options.
Hiking is a favourite local activity, and trails in the vicinity include the Chemin du Paradis (five minutes), those in the Camp de la Bure area (10 minutes) and the Rocher des fées (15 minutes).

Llocs d'interès
Head east to the Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle (50 minutes), a 12th-century fortified structure sitting atop a lushly wooded hill. Climb up its imposing bastion to admire far-reaching views of the Rhine Valley, or wander through its halls gawping at the collection of medieval weapons or the artworks decorating the Kaiser’s Room.
Whatever the season, it pays to spend a day at Gérardmer (50 minutes). In summer, the alpine lake is a top spot for a swim or a pedal-boat excursion; in winter, the trails overlooking the town can be tackled on skis or snowshoes. In town, there’s a bowling alley and the House of Culture and Recreation, with exhibitions and art events.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy (an hour) displays artworks by heavy-hitters such as Caravaggio and Rubens. The museum sits on Place Stanislas, an elegant, monumental square. Not far from here is Parc de la Pépinière, a lush green area with a playground, miniature golf and a fountain with water jets.
