If these sound like activities you could get behind, Camping Les Lacs is a five-star family-friendly site in Soulac-sur-Mer, three kilometres from the nearest sandy stretch and within walking distance of several beaches.
With a warm vibe and modern set-up, comfort and relaxation are the deal here – as there are activities and entertainment for the whole family. There’s a whole programme, by the way, which may come in handy if you have particularly restless kids in tow (as might the games room).
Surrounded by trees and plenty of lush greenery, this is a place where nature feels pretty nearby. There are natural hedges separating the spacious pitches, so the gardens are a pretty private spot to rest in a spot of shade, perhaps with a book or a drink in hand.
It’s the outdoor swimming pool, however, that will pick up the pace a little. The aquatic area is over 500 square metres, and the main thrill comes in the form of the waterslide (great for teenagers especially). There's also a 200-square-metre pool inside you may take a dip in too.
Handily, you won’t have far to go to rinse off, as there is an amenities block on site with toilets and showers. Plus, with a launderette, food shop and a restaurant, you should be able to find a lot of what you need on site.
That’s if you don’t feel like going into Soulac-sur-Mer, where there are restaurants, bars and cafés within five minutes’ drive of the site.

As you might expect of a beach resort, surfing, watersports and hiring a bicycle for a coastline cycle are certainly popular activities around here. The site is also between the Gironde estuary and the Côte d´Argent, two natural sites that are likely to impress nature fans.
The Bordeaux region has a reputation for its vineyards, fortified castles, monuments and scenic villages too. None more so than the sublime forest trails in the Landes (an hour and 45 minutes’ drive) or the Saint-Emilion (two hours) vineyards, where you may fly over in a hot-air balloon.
Perhaps you may want to get lost in Cité du Vin de Bordeaux (an hour and 35 minutes) or hurtle down the Dune of Pilat (an hour and 55 minutes) with your children. The Cordouan Lighthouse (20 minutes) or the Zoo La Palmyre (an hour and 15 minutes) are nice detours too.
To the south, Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans (an hour) has more watersports, while Lacanau (55 minutes) is a real mecca for surfers. Continuing on, the gateway to the Arcachon basin, Cap Ferret (an hour and 50 minutes), has a stretch of scenic beaches.
