If you’ve ever dreamed of a future as a chocolatier, now’s your chance to take a lesson in the good stuff. With a stay at the peaceful Samkhya Finca Agroecologica, 15 minutes’ drive from Montañita in the Santa Elena area, you’ll be surrounded by local organic produce, like cacao, plantain and citrus plants.
Guests here are invited to help out with the cacao harvest and get involved in the cacao powder-making process here, so its likely you’ll go home with new skills up your sleeve. When you’re not busy with the produce, this is a fab base to explore your scenic surrounds – will it be lazy beach days, surfing lessons or treks through the tropical forest?
Whatever you choose, veggie breakfasts are on the menu back at base to set yourself up for a day’s antics, and there are shared cooking facilities for home-cooked eats, too: the kitchen is kitted out with a fridge, oven and hob, as well as all the utensils and crockery you need to rustle up your meals. Barbecues are permitted too, and there’s also a dining area where you can tuck into your creations.
Other little extras include a communal bathroom with free toiletries (bonus), and a wifi connection so you can send pals those pics of your new choc-based career.

The gorgeous beaches are a huge pull here, and the laidback beach vibe makes it easy to spend days chilling by the ocean. It's sensible to start with Montañita beach (15 minutes’ drive), perhaps combining lazy days with the lively nightlife here.
Montañita is also a good pick for catching some waves, and you don’t need to be a surfing pro – there are surf schools to help get novices upright on the water. If that sounds like slightly too much effort, seek out one of the local yoga centres for some calm time instead.
For a bit of wildlife spotting, a day trip to Isla de la Plata is a fine choice; you’re in with a chance of seeing unusual blue-footed birds and whales out here. Catch a boat here from Puerto López, an hour's drive away.
Just outside of Puerto López is Los Frailes Beach – this place is known for being one of Ecuador’s best beaches, so it’s surely worth a look. There’s plenty more to explore in the Machalilla National Park, too, including Agua Blanca (an hour and 15 minutes), where folk head for a healing dip in the natural sulphur lagoon.
