A couple of kilometres of white sand beach a short stroll away – sound just a teeny bit tempting? Then off you go to Uvita, in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas province, for a stay at Camping Casalta.
The lengthy (and yes, most pretty) beach here is part of the Marino Ballena National Park, a marine reserve that’s a popular hangout for all sorts of sea beasts – including dolphins and the humpback whales that often stop off here during mating season (usually December to April). Boat tours, snorkelling trips and scuba outings can be sorted in town to get you closer to the deep-sea action, and guests can also sign up for horse riding, mangrove kayaking and waterfall walks to see more of the surrounds on the land side.
Or you could just spend your hours on the beach, of course – it’s just a few minutes’ walk away through a palm tree plantation, with warm waters for swimming and plenty of space for sunbathing. And should you tire of this particular stretch of sand (pfft), take a wander across the sand bar (aka the Whale Tail) to neighbouring Playa Hermosa for a different take on the tropical view.
Snapped many a pic along the way? Share them with the wider world using the free wifi connection back at the site, or compare stories with fellow guests over a beer by the barbecue or campfire. Supplies for such an evening can be picked up at a couple of stores a few minutes’ walk away, and the village also has a handful of low-key bars and restaurants for those who’d like to head out for eats and drinks.

It’s quite a mini village, Uvita, but it’s well stocked with things to do. As well as the beaches and seafaring expeditions, guests can also take kayak tours through the mangroves, hike to the area’s waterfalls (one easily walkable from the village, others around a half-hour drive away) or ride horses up into the hills.
Costa Rica is, of course, famed for dedicating a huge chunk of its land to national parks (25 per cent, in fact – the highest level in all the world) so you’re never far from a nature reserve around here. Day trips to Corcovado and Los Quetzales national parks are doable with a couple of hours’ drive, and Manuel Antonio is about an hour away.
The animals run wild in the parks, so may not put in an appearance at the time you wish; to be sure of your spottings, take the 20-minute drive to Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary or climb up to the treetop trails at Rainmaker conservation project (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive).
