Fond of a dip? Then have yourself a hol at Camping Vale das Cachoeiras – it's right there inside a waterpark with five slides to slip down as much as you like. More serene submerges can be had too: the two pools have views out over a region known for its lush mountainous scenery and whooshing waterfalls.
Speaking of waterfalls, the biggest in the state of Rondônia (flowing from the Mandi river through a 5,000-hectare protected reserve before dropping 32 metres from its tallest point to the ground) is hidden away in the park’s grounds. Simply walk a kilometre into the forest (or hitch a lift…) then stroll for 600 metres on a trail between the trees until you hear the sounds of rushing water. Other wooden paths for hiking at this site pass by centuries-old trees, orchids, banana trees and clumps of bamboo.
Once you’ve had your fill of wandering, retreat back to the waterpark and order Brazilian-style grilled meat and Italian ice cream at the restaurant, or use the barbecue area to cook for yourself before working it all off at the footie field or on the volleyball court.
Other facilities at this site include a toilet block, showers and a wifi connection. Some of the slides are not suitable for children – ask at the park for more information on which ones – and there is an extra charge for access.

If visiting the site’s waterfall whets your appetite for more, the valley around the park has 10 or so smaller cascades with free falls ranging from three to 10 metres in height; take a trek to snap photos of these natural attractions while keeping an eye out for animals including monkeys, capybaras, deer and tropical birds as well.
To spot more creatures, drive for a couple of hours to Pacaás Novos National Park – named after the mountain inside it – or paraglide from Parque Chico Mendes, 55 minutes away, with views out across the UNESCO-listed town of Ouro Preto.
Drop down to this destination later on to bimble around the baroque bridges, fountains and squares accessible through steep and winding cobbled streets; there are churches and chapels to check out too, including an 18th-century structure paying homage to St. Francis of Assisi.
