Wine, wildlife and watersports… sound like a top combo of ingredients for your country break? Geoff and Barb’s place is right on the banks of the Murray River, two kilometres from the Sturt Highway for easy access and surrounded by woods and wetlands for a fab few days’ rural relaxing.
As well as the mighty Murray itself, there are lots of little creeks all around Kingston-on-Murray Caravan Park, perhaps best explored with a peaceful paddle in a canoe for glimpses of the birds and other beasts that call this area home. More energetic aquatic pursuits are nearby too, as are some super fishing spots for less active days trying to hook yabbies and callops.
Riverland also happens to be Australia’s largest grape growing region, making this a great place for a day or few of pottering around the various wineries, wandering through the vineyards and sipping samples.
Kids not sounding too enthused by the idea of all this splendid serenity? It’s worth noting that the site is well set up for their demands, too, with a playground, giant board games, football oval and pedal cars all available for their use, as well as the lovely landscaped outdoor pool. Come in the school hols and they can also get stuck in to activities such as table tennis competitions, crafts and learning to cook brekkie for their folks (what an excellent idea).
For the rest of your cooking needs, a communal barbie and modern camp kitchen are on site.

Llocs d'interès
Water, water, everywhere – and so many ways to enjoy it. Hire canoes on site to paddle along the river and into the little creeks in search of wildlife, settle on the jetty for a peaceful day of fishing or take a cruise on Loch Luna, next to the site.
If it’s more adrenaline you seek, head to Renmark, half an hour away, for wakeboarding and waterskiing, or get set for muddy antics at Loveday 4x4 Adventure Park. Benson Park, 20 minutes away, is the place for horse riding of all varieties – bush trails, twilight rides and kids’ lessons among them.
For a taste of life in a bygone age it’s worth making the half-hour trip to Loxton Historical Village – homes, a school room and shops are among the exhibits at this living museum. And for tastes of some of the region’s famed wines, several local wineries offer tours, samples and top-notch nosh at their restaurants.
