Based in the crofting township of Linicro, the family-friendly glamping accommodation is in wooden ‘wigwam’ pods – and there’s the major-league bonus of an outdoor centre on hand too.
The expert teams at adjoining Whitewave: Skye’s Outdoor Centre – family-run since 1990 – organise sporting adventures for everybody, regardless of age and ability. Try kayaking and canoeing in sheltered waters, or test your head for heights climbing and abseiling on sheer sea cliffs. There are mountain-boarding sessions for the daredevils among you, or – more sedately – you can practise your aim during family archery lessons.
Whitewave operates a self-service check in, so on arrival your keys will be in the door and names on blackboards outside each cabin. There’s plenty of parking and all the lodgings are heated and well-insulated against the bracing Skye weather. The site is based on a croft with plenty of rough field for kids and dogs to run around on freely and safely.
The port of Uig (10 minutes’ drive) is your nearest stop for picking up essentials in the store, and it also has a couple of great hostelries featuring the best of Skye produce on their menus too, if you’d rather not go down the self-catering route.

Whitewave Wigwams is a fabulous base for exploring the Isle of Skye under your own steam. Follow a dramatic clifftop trail to Rubha Hunish and the most northerly tip of Trotternish Peninsula – keep a lookout for the occasional whale in the wild seas – or hike the looped footpath along Quiraing (both reached in half an hour by bike), with its distinctive spiky rock crags.
For a longer day in the saddle, cycle across Trotternish to Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls Viewpoint (an hour and 20 minutes, watch out for golden eagles as you ride, you might get lucky) for impressive views of a cascade tumbling over towering cliffs into the sea.
To get a feel for the tumultuous history of Skye, visit the ‘cleared village’ of Boreraig (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive) overlooking Loch Eishort, its sheepfolds, church and cottages abandoned in the Highland Clearances of 1750 to 1860. Visit Flora MacDonald’s grave in Kilmuir Cemetery, and learn about the crofting life in the preserved cottages at Skye Museum of Island Life (both 10 minutes, or 40 minutes' walk).
