  • Large site five minutes’ drive from Paonia, in Colorado wine country
  • Needle Rock Trailhead a half-hour drive; fishing an hour and a half
  • Resident goats and chickens; views of the Rocky Mountains
Easily accessible off Highway 133, a five-minute drive from the town of Paonia, Sage View Ranch has multiple accommodations spread over 11 acres of the North Fork Valley. Sitting in the middle of Colorado wine country, with far-reaching views of the splendid Rocky Mountains, this is the place to come when you want to reconnect with nature. Leave your smartphone behind as you stroll through sage fields or walk along paths crossing the juniper forest. You are welcome to gorge on anything you might find on your wanderings: berries, pears and apricots abound in this area. Meanwhile the kids will likely be only too happy to make friends with the animals: Valentine the goat, in particular, loves a fuss, and there are also chickens and roosters, plus cats and dogs. If you’re after an active holiday, there's plenty of choice, with the Needle Rock Trailhead just a half-hour drive away. There’s also hiking and biking at Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre And Gunnison National Forests (one hour), while the Blue Mesa Reservoir (an hour and a half), in Curecanti National Recreation Area, has swimming and trout fishing. And don’t forget to explore the local wineries, where you can stock up on Pinots and Rieslings. There are showers and portacabin toilets on site, plus a food shop where you can purchase (among other things) eggs produced by the lovely resident chickens. There's also a sunroom to relax (with wifi) along with some items for purchase, such as coffee and water bottles. Nearby Paonia has supermarkets and heaps of restaurants.

Local attractions

A dramatic landscape of rugged peaks and vertiginous drops carved by the Gunnison River, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (40 minutes’ drive) is a magnet for hikers. The area is also popular for rock climbing and trout fishing, and wildlife enthusiasts might be able to spot marmot, chipmunks and elk. Meanwhile, birdwatchers might want to spend a day at Ridgway State Park (one and a quarter hours), where a large reservoir (with a swimming beach) attracts Canada geese, avocets and herons, alongside bald eagles and other raptors. Hiking and biking trails also abound, leading you through juniper forests and through open grasslands. Aspen (one hour and 50 minutes) is renowned for its ski resorts, but there is much more to this town than just snowy slopes. After checking out the contemporary works at the Aspen Art Museum, you can head to the John Denver Sanctuary, a tranquil garden dotted with boulders carved with Denver’s song lyrics.
