  • Peaceful wild-style campsite in Costilla County, Colorado
  • A 10-minute drive from Fort Garland; San Luis 20 minutes
  • A 65-acre property with exceptional sunsets, sunrises and stargazing
What's life like at Campe Diem? Think classic Colorado landscapes, 65 acres of pinyon pines and a whole lot of blissful silence. This wild campsite in Costilla County is set in the south of the Centennial State, roughly 40 minutes' drive from the border with New Mexico. Deserts, mountains, mesas and more can be discovered in the surrounding area, with spectacular natural sites like Great Sand Dunes National Park (45 minutes) and Rio Grande National Forest (an hour and a half) within easy reach. The site is private and secluded, tucked away behind a mesa where you have uninterrupted mountain views and lots of space to play with. As you'll see from the photos, this spot takes big skies to a whole new level, making Campe Diem an exceptional bolt-hole for breaks full of sunsets, sunrises and stargazing. It's also handy to know that four-legged friends are very welcome to come along and join in on the action here. Campe Diem is about two miles from Mountain Home Reservoir, a scenic state park where you can fish, swim or just chill around the grill. For a meal out, try the pizzeria and diner in Fort Garland (10 minutes), or head south on State Highway 159 to San Luis (20 minutes) for a convenience store and other food outlets.

Local attractions

This off-grid campground makes a great base for driving over tarmac-free terrain, so feel free to bring your own four-wheel drive or chat to the owners about off-road safaris in the surrounding area. For other high-adrenaline activities in the local area, you could get in touch with expert local guides in Fort Garland (10 minutes' drive) to book onto a hunting trip, or cross over into New Mexico and head to Red River Ski and Summer Area (an hour and five minutes) for a range of active options. History and heritage also abound in this part of the American West – nearby San Luis (20 minutes) is oldest continuously occupied town in Colorado and is home to the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross, a Spanish-style adobe church reflecting this area's deep Hispanic roots. For landscapes and scenery, meanwhile, turn to Great Sand Dunes National Park (45 minutes), a spectacular mix of grasslands, wetlands, lakes and tundra. En route, you'll pass Blanca Peak (30 minutes), which has a popular hiking back trail of its own, as well as the gorgeous Zapata Falls (40 minutes).
