  • Family-friendly site with restaurant in Tanzania’s biggest reserve
  • Wildlife haven: spot lions, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, crocs and zebras
  • Prime spot for clear sky stargazing: barbecues and campfires allowed
Whip out your binoculars, brush up on your animal identification skills, pack your khakis and head for Selous Mapumziko Lodge, a family-friendly site less than an hour’s drive from the village of Mloka in the Pwani region of Tanzania. Inside the Selous Game Reserve, Mapumkizo Lodge is a prime spot to use as a base for safari excursions. The many options here include signing up for a traditional safari, taking a boating safari along the Rufiji river (a fab way to spot elephants at the water’s edge), or stepping out on a walking safari to get up close with the local wildlife. If you don’t fancy a guided tour, you can always explore by yourself (there’s bicycle parking on site, so bring along your two-wheeled for jaunts in the wild), remembering to keep your eyes peeled for lions, rhinos, hippos, crocs, zebras and giraffes, among countless others that could be lurking... There’s a restaurant on site, but if you want to look after yourself you can also get the barbie stoked and cook up your own eats. Settle down for the evening next to the campfire, making the most of the seemingly endless skies for a spot of clear-skies stargazing.

Local attractions

There’s more to Selous Game Reserve than safari tours: if you’re planning on sticking around for a while, devote a day or two to wider explorations, making tracks for Stiegler’s Gorge, Selous Grave (the burial place of the military captain for whom the reserve is named) and the scenic Maji Moto hot springs, where fish will nibble your toes. Although there’s plenty in Selous to keep you busy, if you’re lucky enough to be continuing your hols elsewhere, make tracks for the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, just over four hours’ drive away. There’s lots to see here, but if you only have time for a few things, the Village Museum (an open-air museum depicting life in various parts of Tanzania), the Tanzania Centre for Cultural Heritage and the Mwenge Woodcarvers Market are musts. Have kids in tow? You might like to add Kunduchi Wet ‘n’ Wild Water Park to that list. While in Dar es Salaam, take a ferry to the stunning island of Zanzibar, a two-hour ride off the coast: options include a traipse along spectacular beaches, a visit to the Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond and the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, scanning the branches for the endangered red colobus monkeys (this is the only place in the world you’ll find them), and a poke around the ruins of Mtoni Palace, built for a sultan and his many wives and children.
