  • Beachfront park in a natural botanical garden with plenty of trees
  • A 10-minute drive to Playa La Rijana beach and an hour from Alhambra
  • Kids' club on site; supermarkets/restaurants 10 minutes away on foot
Sometimes you need time to stop and smell the flowers – and gorgeous grounds brimming with botany of all sorts will have you doing just that on a break at Camping Huerta Romero, a Granada area site close to the coast. Find some shade under the big trees dotted across the gardens or soak up the sun down on the beach; the park sits just off Marina Rincón so you can be strolling on scenic sands in minutes – or canoeing, diving and flyboarding with the watersports rentals on offer. Up for a lazy lope around instead? Facing the sea, a two-minute wander to the left leads to Playa de Castell de Ferro. Other beaches in the region are within driving distance, from Playa La Rijana cove with its clear waters (under 10 minutes – bring a snorkel and mask for fishy frolics) to the wide and sandy Playa de Calahonda (15 minutes). As Camping Huerta Romero’s in the tourist town of Castell de Ferro, it's just a short walk away to get to tapas restaurants and supermarkets selling local delicacies like Spanish ham. Fancy a crack at cooking alfresco? Barbecues are allowed back on site and you can send mini holidaymakers to the kids’ club to keep them out of your hair while you sort dinner. For sightseeing further away, the cities of Almería, Málaga and Granada are all an hour’s drive, with the UNESCO-listed Alhambra palace and fortress complex also an hour away.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked: Location - practically on the beach

Disliked: Very run down with lots of shabby static vans on site. A lot of noise late into the night. I have to say that the facilities were spotlessly clean.

Electric optional gravel and sand tent pitch (large)

Liked: The pitch was large and shady, and the site had good access to the beach. But this site felt a bit like it was almost entirely long-term residents rather than people passing through. We were the only non-spanish guests, which is odd for August. There was a little supermarket in walking distance and a couple of cafes. The kids were intrigued by the canvas greenhouses covering all the available land in the region as they thought it was a zombie apocalypse.

Disliked: Wifi was only available for a few minutes then you had to pay for it. Really noisy at night due to the neighbouring holiday apartments, and first thing in the morning every day woken up by the dustbin lorry. Had to drive quite a long way to any supermarket apart from the teeny tiny one in the village.

From the manager: Hi Felicity, First of all, thank you very much for your stay with us. We just wanted to point out that even though the provider sends a 10-minute free wifi message, the campsite's wifi is totally free. For your peace of mind, you paid nothing for this service. Have a good trip!

Relaxed site, good facilities & friendly staff.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Huerta Romero was a lovely stay. The perfect spot to relax and get away from a busy schedule. It’s set within what only can be described as a botanical garden. The staff were very friendly (lady on check in) and overall a relaxed attitude to guests who can enjoy their holidays. The beach is a stone throw away and is predominately a Spanish resort which we loved. The facilities were good. Next door is an amazing fish and chip shop and very well priced. There are some lovely local beaches not far 10 minutes by car to snorkel and kayak.

Disliked: Unfortunately I booked back in January after reading that they had a kids club. This wasn’t the case. I usually choose sites with a pool for our summer holiday but Huerta Romero had the beach and a kids club so a little disappointment there that it wasn’t running. Our pitch backed onto a busy road and on that road were also a block of apartments. That didn’t bother us too much as we were up late anyway but could be a problem if you are looking for a early night in peak season or wishing for a lay in past 8am ☺️. Better to ask for a pitch away from there if at all possible.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked: We loved this site, the pitches aren’t huge but we chose it as a stop off for a couple of nights on our way to Granada and because of its proximity to a beach. The site has lots of lovely planting and trees for shade and has a lovely natural feel to it, rather than a lot of sites that feel man made, and our pitch was lovely and level. Because of all of the foliage the sounds of all of the birds was so lovely. The beach was yards away from our pitch, it’s not sandy but little pebbles which didn’t bother us and even on a weekend in May there were very few people on it, which we love! The scenery is stunning as you sit on the beach, with mountains on one side. The promenade was being re laid when we visited so you had to watch where you were walking, but we could see that this also will look lovely once finished. The reception team were very friendly and helpful, we really could find nothing to fault.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Pitches well laid out and wide. Services are modern and very clean. Bar and restaurant very smart. There is cabaret entertainment. This really is right on the beach, although a bit shingly. Nice level 300mtr walk into village. Dogs are welcome .

Disliked: Reception has strange hours, shut Sundays. Paying extra for a dog ?????.

From the manager: Hello Martin! Thank you, first for your visit and also for your contribution! In this campsite you do not pay for pets, they are free. Perhaps you found us overworked if you saw the reception closed. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Happy journey!

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: In general, it is a really nice Camping ground with lots of plants. Friendly staff that speaks English well. Electricity and fresh water close by. Plenty of hot water, facilities usually reasonably clean. the beach is close by and really nice in my opinion. As it was December and windy, I didn't go into the water, however. good WLAN

Disliked: The place has a potentially eery feeling to it. the plants are really nice in my opinion, but do give the impression of the place being a little unkept. Some of the sanitary installations need to be changed as they're broken down. Animals (cats, dogs) roam freely which is cute but means there's a lot of poop everywhere. There's tons of birds in the trees above the pits that can get a bit noisy and especially - bird poop everywhere :( I really liked the place in general, but even for me as a nature lover it didn't feel very sanitary sometimes, especially because of the birds. Might be different in summer when you go to the beach more and do not stay at your pitch.

Local attractions

Beaches and cities are a big draw in this area of course, but other things to do are manifold – including birdwatching expeditions to Charca de Suárez (30 minutes’ drive away) to stalk squacco herons, flamingos, cormorants and Eurasian spoonbills in the wetlands among rushes and prairie grasses. Nearby in Motril a couple of museums are worth a look, like the Preindustrial Museum Sugarcane dedicated to the region’s 1,000-year past cultivating the sweet stuff and the town’s history museum (both a 25-minute drive). South of here (and half an hour from Camping Huerta Romero) is a golf club if fans of the fairway are getting antsy for a game. Craving the coast again? Go set eyes on it – while roaming around a massive castle – at Castillo de Salobreña on a hilltop 30 minutes away and with views out over the sea. Further along from here (10 minutes) is the Aquatropic Water Park if splash time’s calling your kids’ names.
