Looking for somewhere cool to lay your head on the Costa de la Luz? You’ve found it at Kampaoh El Palmar, a tiny gem of a campsite in El Palmar de Vejer, 10 minutes’ drive from Conil de la Frontera. Here you can escape from every-day humdrum into the laid-back vibe of western Andalusia, discover miles of golden sand, go surfing off El Palmar beach (10 minutes’ walk) or simply chill in the sunshine. Everything is laid on for you so life is very easy here. Accommodation comes in a mix of sizes and sleek styles, all are kitted out with bed linen, towels and electricity; just bring yourself and your gear, plus a good book for lounging on your decking. You don’t need to stray far to buy everything you need. Freshly baked bread, vegetables, fruits, groceries, drinks and Andalusian souvenirs are available at the site’s mini-market, just a few steps away from your pitch. Make new friends as you cook up paella in the communal outdoor kitchen, or ditch the self-catering intentions and keep yourself fed and watered on tapas and local beers at Kampaoh Picnic restaurant. Its covered terrace overlooks the swimming pool, set in a shady garden surrounded by trees. Facilities-wise, the smart wooden toilet blocks have spacious showers, disabled and family facilities, washing-up sinks and there’s a laundry service too.

Local attractions

Surfing groupies will want to be straight off to El Palmar beach (10 minutes’ walk), one of the best Costa de la Luz spots for beginners – there are surf schools backing the sand – but with plenty of decent waves to keep experts happy. Non-surfers can laze in the sun or hang out in casual ‘chiringuito’ beach bars. Walkers and naturalists may like to head for Breña y Marismas de Barbate Natural Park (20 minutes’ drive) to spot waders and gulls on the marshland, or hike though umbrella pine stands – home of finches and hoopoes – to the rocky headland and landmark lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar. If you fancy an urban day out, historic and impossibly handsome Cádiz (40 minutes) fits the bill with its impressive Santa Cruz Cathedral, Phoenician ruins and the brace of castles bookending popular La Caleta beach. Have a wander around Plaza de España and the leafy, fountain-filled Alameda Apodaca park before retiring to a bar along the cobbled alleys of La Viña for early-evening tapas.
