  • Quiet and well-maintained resort in the Little Karoo semi desert
  • A 15-minute drive from Oudtshoorn and its famed ostrich farms
  • Waterside setting with fishing, canoeing and two pools
Go west, go down, go up… and go to the spectacular Western Cape park of Oppi Dam Resort, on the road to the famed Cango caves and surrounded by the scenic peaks of the Swartberg mountains. Days underground are easily sorted from this swish place, as are mountain climbs, waterfall wanders and wildlife adventures all around: as the Oppi Dam Resort team say, if you love nature, this is the place to be. Oppi Dam Resort is a peaceful and well-maintained space, with a range of accommodation options set up to suit all budgets. It’s in South Africa’s Little Karoo region, a semi-desert area of high temperatures, farmland and wildlife reserves, and is 15 minutes’ drive from Oudtshoorn, the town nicknamed the ostrich capital of the world (an ostrich farm is half a kilometre from Oppi Dam and two more are within a short drive). The site is also on the Route 62 wine trail: if you’re a fan of your vino, this too is the place to be… And what of that dam? Indeed this site is in a waterside setting, with fishing and canoeing available directly from the grounds: cast off in or paddle in the water, then meander back to base to plunge into one of the two pools. And then? The resort also has a deli selling local wines: bag a bottle here to sample in the shade or by the pool, or toddle along to one of the regular tastings held for locals and guests.

Local attractions

South Africa’s so vast it can be a bit of a trek to get from one attraction to the other: not so at Oppi Dam Resort, where a nicely nifty lot of stuff to see and do is within pleasingly easy reach. It’d be burying your head in the sand to be anywhere near Oudtshoorn and not have a look at its thriving ostrich trade, established since the mid 19th century and home to the world's largest ostrich population. One ostrich farm is within walking distance of the resort at 900 metres away; another is 20 minutes’ drive south, and the C.P. Nel Museum telling the tale of the local trade is within 15 minutes at Oudtshoorn. Feathery souvenirs? But of course: run along to the Ostrich Emporium, also in Oudtshoorn, for feathers, leathers and decorated eggs. To see other South African animals, Cango Wildlife Ranch is a 10-minute drive south on the way to Oudtshoorn, and has over 90 species, a kids’ zone, animal encounters and restaurants. Or investigate the more ancient side of South Africa with a subterranean adventure at Cango caves, a 15-minute drive in the other direction, or a half-hour drive east to the Rust-en-Vrede Waterfall, between the two Swartberg nature reserves.
