  • Scenic site at the foot of the spectacular Langeberg mountains
  • In the town of Montagu, famed for its rock climbing routes
  • Swimming pool, playground, shared kitchen and braai drums on site
Settle in the shade beneath the trees at De Bos Guest Farm, a family-friendly site in the town of Montagu – a particularly scenic part of South Africa’s Western Cape. This site is in prime position to act as a base for making the most of Montagu’s famed rock-climbing spots: it’s a five-minute drive or 25-minute walk to the Steeple, and about 10 minutes’ drive to Bosch Crag and Montagu’s most-visited spot, Legoland. As the Langeberg mountains border the Klein Karoo, there are plenty of non-rock-based explores to be had nearby, too – starting in Montagu itself, where there are restaurants, hot springs and horse riding, all within about 10 minutes. If a more peaceful (some might say lazier) stay appeals, stick around on site to take dips in the swimming pool (while soaking up those stunning mountain views), wander among pecan nut, oak and karee trees, and cook tasty dinners on one of the movable braai drums dotted around the site.

Local attractions

When guests are done clambering up and down rocky crags, there’s plenty else to do hereabouts. More leisurely days can be had at the nine-hole golf course five minutes’ drive from base, or by heading to the nearby Protea Farm (30 minutes) for a tractor ride to a stunning viewpoint in the Langeberg mountains, and to sample local eats. Of course, South Africa is known for more than food – it’s a top wine spot too. It’s 30 minutes from the site to Robertson Winery for tastings; a little closer to base, guests can be aboard a river cruise, sampling local tipples and food, within 25 minutes. Outdoorsy types might gravitate instead towards Bontebok National Park, 55 minutes away, a park set up specifically to conserve its namesake, the bontebok, which was approaching extinction in the early 1800s. As well as keeping eyes peeled for these now plentiful creatures, visitors to the park can take game viewing self-drives, go birdwatching or just stop for a picnic and braai. Lucky enough to have time to travel onwards? The site is a little under two and a half hours from Cape Town, so head this way to wander botanical gardens, tour the former township of Bo-Kaap, take in the views from Table Mountain, and maybe even spring for a helicopter ride out over the water.
