  • Friendly family-run resort 10 minutes' drive from Knysna town
  • A short walk from the beach and a kilometre from Knysna Heads
  • Swimming pool, playground, trampoline and braai facilities on site
Beach, mountains, lagoon and forest… as natural settings go, it’d be harder to find one much more scenic than Knysna. Bang in the middle of all this gorgeousness is family-run Woodbourne Resort, in a most handy location for easy access to all the above. Owners John and Sue certainly picked a cracking spot for their welcoming and friendly resort: the beaches and ocean viewpoints of Knysna Heads are a few minutes’ walk away, and the next-door neighbours have a private vlei area that’s mighty popular with migrating waterbirds (keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of all sorts of exotic types winging their way past). Fishing, boat trips, watersports, tennis and hikes are all nearby for those who’d like to head out for a bit of activity. Can’t wait to get the legs going (or got tiddlers with deeper energy reserves than their elders)? Stick around on site to whack a volleyball about, swim in the outdoor pool or pour out a glass of local vino while the kids do their thing at the play area and trampoline. Fuelling whatever antics you choose is a cinch here – two restaurants are within sauntering distance and there are braai facilities provided for cooking up alfresco feasts. Supplies for such events can be picked up in Knysna town, 10 minutes away – or you could hang around there for eats and drinks if the mood takes you.

Local attractions

Folks who like a bit of fresh-air activity should do well around here – bring along your rods for fishing out on the lagoon or in nearby rivers, or take to the water yourself for various watersports from Bollard Bay (five minutes’ drive). If you’re more of a club-wielding type, take yourself off to one of the three golf courses within 15 minutes’ drive (don’t expect your best round ever though – the stunning sea views may prove just a tad distracting). Walks are top-notch around here too – take your pick from mountain hikes, leisurely lagoon rambles and wanders around the Featherbed Private Nature Reserve (half an hour away), looking out for local wildlife as you seek out the ancient sea caves. And if it’s wildlife you want, they don’t come much bigger than the elephant... Guarantee sightings at Knysna Elephant Park, 20 minutes away – go early for breakfast with the big beasts or head over during the day to get up close to the herd. Time to flop? Take a few minutes’ walk to the nearest beach or drive along the coast a bit for more sandy stretches – Bollard Bay (five minutes) and Buffels Bay (half an hour) are both fab choices for swims and sunbathing.
