  • Remote site above the Molen River Gorge in the Kammanassie Valley
  • Hikes from site; half an hour's drive from Kammanassie Nature Reserve
  • Bar, restaurant, 4x4 driving trails, horse treks and air rifle range
There can’t be many finer spots than Eagle Falls Country Lodge and Camping, a green oasis shaded by willow trees in South Africa’s Kammanassie Valley. The Molen river runs by this dog-friendly site in Western Cape province, and it’s within walking distance of plunging gorges and thundering waterfalls. The surrounding natural beauty and country air of the Klein Karoo area are paired off with clean, but unfussy facilities on the site. There’s a traditional covered lapa shelter for eating and meeting in, a communal braai (barbecue) area and kitchen facilities to rent when the weather’s less friendly. You can also hire tents and mattresses if you don’t want to bring them along. Washrooms are clean with hot showers and the on-site laundry and outdoor washing-up area make the chores less of a bore. You can buy supplies at the shop and, better still, treat yourself to sustenance of the liquid and solid kind at the bar and restaurant, where there’s also a big screen TV for those who can’t bear to be separated from the live sporting action. Alternatively, try some sporting action of your own at the site's air rifle shooting range. There are guided horse treks around the site and a series of 4x4 trails of varying trickiness and length. The friendly team at Eagle Falls will happily furnish you with directions to the gorge and falls, where you can spend hours wandering the rock formations and caves, picnicking by the roaring rapids and wandering the nature-filled spaces of the valley.

Local attractions

It’s a big country of big distances, but from your base at Eagles Falls Country Lodge and Camping there’s still a fine spread of things to do and see in a day. It’s a half-hour drive to the lush walking and driving trails of the Kammanassie Nature Reserve, home to herds of Cape Mountain Zebra, baboons and over 66 species of birds. A similar distance away, guided tours through the Cango Caves take visitors through a geological wonder world of caverns and rock sculptures, all carved naturally over aeons. Oudtshoorn, an hour away, is well supplied with shops, supermarkets and eateries; just outside the town you can visit the Safari Ostrich Farm for tours around and amongst the extraordinary beasts, and drop in on the Cango Wildlife Ranch and Conservation Centre for one-on-one encounters with cheetahs, lemurs and crocs. The Indian Ocean and the pleasant coastal city of George are around an hour and 10 minutes away; from there you can drive west or east along the famed Garden Route, stopping off for wildlife spotting, wine sampling and watersports aplenty. If you're heading onwards, it's about three and a half hours to Port Elizabeth and six hours to Cape Town.
