  • Unfenced farm site with swimming pool and views of the Kalahari Desert
  • Just over an hour's drive from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
  • Private reserve with lookout point, 4x4 trail and sunset game drives
What’s in a name? So ponders the lovestruck Juliet in Shakespeare’s well-known play, and so might you when staying at Loch Maree Guest Farm and Field Camp. For this is the Kalahari Desert, not the Highlands, and there’s not a loch in sight. Plenty of sandgrouse can be spotted on this friendly and unfenced South African farm site though, along with eagles and vultures, springbok and the industrious weaver birds who build haystack-sized colonies to live in with several hundred of their closest friends. A 40-minute drive from the town of Askham and just over an hour from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the farm is surrounded by red dunes and gleaming white saltpans, green trees and grasslands, which are alive with birds and mammals and steeped in the rich cultural heritage of the local Khomani San people. Stay here and see the lot from this easygoing site with its own game reserve and four wheel drive trails… and a tempting pool for cooling dips afterwards. Also on the grounds is a lookout shed for viewing the shifting dunes and their wildlife, handily next to a braai/barbecue area for combined nature observation and dining, with firewood provided. If you want to see further afield, proprietors Johann and Retha can arrange a game drive, finishing off with sundowners on the crest of a dune, and point you towards four wheel drive self-drive circuits both short and long. Evening meals are served on request.

Local attractions

Shared between South Africa and Botswana and split by the Auob river, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is an hour and 15 minutes away by car and, like the surrounding area, it demands a better word than desert. Dunes of all hues, from Martian red to orange and pink, are interspersed with acacia thorns and riverbeds, silent and then suddenly in uproar as herds of blue wildebeest and red haartebeest hurtle through. For a wilderness that’s walkable, and populated by meerkats, it’s a 50-minute trip to the Kalahari Trails Nature Reserve, specialising in smaller creatures best seen close up, with a watering hole that attracts flocks of feeding and preening birds at sunset. To see the landscape as the locals do, call in on the Khomani San Living Museum half an hour away, for walks with experienced trackers, demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills and the telling of timeless stories through word, dance and song. Round off the cultural experience with a culinary one at Aunt Koera’s Farm Kitchen (40 minutes) where traditional Khomani San treats like ash bread, venison potjie and Kalahari lamb chops are prepared over fires and in three-legged pots.
